Diary of a frustrated small stakes poker player!

August 11, 2010, 11:57 am

Hello everyone,

This is my 1st blog ever (so please don't be too critical, but i would like too be honest should you decide to coment on anthing i write and perhaps even help me along the way!) and i would like to give a little insight into my thoughts about poker in general.

So first of all a little bit about me, well, i have been playing poker for about 4 years now off and on, and overall i make a small profit i.e. ~ £800 a year which is not massive, but a profit is a profit.  I tend to focus on 6max sngs, however, they leave feeling very frustrated alot of the time;

1) Due to the variance, and the total idiot calls at the small stakes levels i.e. $6 level

I would also be interested to see what you the community have to say i.e. how do i progress from making a small profit (as i must be doing something right!) to building a bigger bankroll and playing in the higher sngs? is it as simple as playing sheer volume of games? As i am currently playing $2 6max sngs with a bankroll of $80

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • first things first you need a bigger bsankroll to move up stakes (unless you are willing and able to reload if you bust out) due to the mentioned variance. I would keep grinding and try to look for spots where you can improve or might play it differently vs a different/better player while you build your bankroll. An interesting paradox ix is that playing vs bad players you rarely need to take a coin flip as you know you will get a better spot(s) latter due to his bad play, but vs better players you need to be willing to push small advantages. the prime example is a pair vs 2 over cards. Firstly it is not really a flip, the pair is a 55/45 favorite ignoring pot odds. So versus a bad player you might pass, but vs a better player you are more willing to get it in, especially w/ the made pair since it is the favorite. hg
