I think a little update is in order from my escapades on the felt yesterday, and all in all a positive evenings work whereby i increased my bankroll by a hefty $13 to $93 and therefore creeping closer to moving up stakes which will be around the $120 mark.  I must say that i feel quite positive about my poker game at the moment, well that is untill fulltilt badbeats me into depression.

One thing i have noticed and would like your opinions in the community is that i have been pushing all in when i have top pair top kicker and there is a flush draw out there, i am begining to wonder whether this is a worth while play as due to the small stakes i am playing i am starting to realise that i have more or less no fold equity when i make this bet as no-one at these stakes seems to fold flush draws, i would be very intersted to here your thoughts on this?

  • Top pr top kicker is nice but post flop there is still plenty of hands that beat it. In this situation, I personally never go all in unless it is against a min buy short stack. I think it's best to build the pot and re-evaluate the turn and river. I see a lot of players call the flop cbet with an apparent draw. when it misses they fold the river more than 50% of the time. I guess pushing all in takes away all your options. Yes you could win a big pot, but the only guy that will call either has you beat already or like you said has the draw that could beat you. You get all in and you really don't know what he has until the show down. You would be surprised where all those little extra chips come from after you cbet the flop and take the pot when cbetting the turn. I think you should give yourself the chance to evaluate each phase of the hand. Just my thoughts.

  • If you have top pair top kicker, then you definitely *want* people calling with their flush draws. Fold equity is only a concept used when you're bluffing or semi-bluffing on a draw. If your opponent will happily call any bet with a flush draw, then bet the maximum he'll call with when you're betting for value!
