So i picked up Tim (OP Lead Pro) and headed down to Mt. Pleasant Michigan. We were off to play the main event of the Heartland Poker Tour Championship Open! The buyin was 1500 +150 for the house. We got there on friday (late at night) and played some 5/10 nl. In an hour i made about $900 before the game broke! We registered for the tournament and went back to the hotel.

Tournament time! The celeb pros were announced. They included Annie Duke, Joe Sebok, Darvin Moon, Kathy Liebert, Joe Cada, and a few others. Apparently Annie Duke recently purchased the HPT (lets hope she doesn't scam the poker world like her brother did).

I got into a big hand early. Ran qq into JA on a J93 two heart flop. River was an A. I then pushed on a straight flush draw and bricked. The field looked very soft. I decided to re-enter (which you could do for the first 4 levels) and was now in for $3200. 2nd table was going well i got my stack to about 55k in chips at the dinner break. I then came back and lost 1/2 my stack with top pair top kicker running into a flush (he got there on river, but we got it in on flop). I then got kk with blinds 600 / 1200 with a 200 ante. A guy with tons of chips (150k +) limped early, and i made it 3500 to go. Another guy in late position called and so did the early position guy. Flop came 983 two hearts and the guy in early position shoves all in. I call and other guy folded. He shows q10 off. River was a J. GG Sir!

I went to play cash games. Made another 1000 playing a mixed 2/5 nl and 2/5 plo round by round. So overall i lost 1400 plus expenses. But it was well worth it as the field was filled with 380 satellite winners and first place took down 230k.

Tim ended up cashing for 2k and I got my 3% in which we swapped (60 bucks for me lol). He got sucked out on for a ton of chips. Ran aa vs ak suited and the guy hit back door flush on him.

Apparently an 18 year old kid named Brandon Barnes finished 2nd and cashed for $117k! Great job!

On the way back we stopped in the closest town as we wanted to watch the Detroit Lions game. Tim had just gotten Cam Netwon in our fantasy league and he wanted to see him in action (Carolina was playing Detroit).

We were amazed to see 3 or 4 people in each of the downtown bars. Apparently the economy is so bad in Michigan that people were not able to afford $1 beers at the local downtown bar. Kinda scary if you ask me.

Overall I was impressed with the job they did at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort!

Cheers,

Errol

Going to watch the wsop final 3 players at 9pm! .. should be good.. on espn! tonight! I am going to cheer for Pius Heinz who has 107,800. But Ben Lamb will probably win (luckbox, along with great player). I think it will be better for online poker at its current state if a European wins! However it may be good for the future of American poker (both live and online) if Ben Lamb wins!

Either way i am going to watch it! Should make for a good heads up match if Lamb and Heinz go heads up!

3 LEFT in WSOP main!

Ok so it’s that time of year. The 2011 WSOP is well under way. I wanted to write a blog posting to give you guys a little prep for Vegas Poker during the WSOP. I have posted a simular post a year ago, but here it is again!

Tournaments – Of course the WSOP has great tournaments. Everyone is looking to get that bracelet. However for most this is just a dream. The wsop has improved the blind structures of all the NL events. As of last year you now get triple the buy-in in starting chips and deep structures. This provides plenty of play for everyone. And yes it now favours the pros (slightly for the 1k events). We no longer see the flipaments that occurred 4 or 5 years ago when you only got double the amount of chips relative to your buyin. In addition to the wsop events the Rio is now featuring June $550 No-Limit Hold’em Tournaments .

Main event – satellites: Jump into the Sit-n-go’s satellite room. You can get into the main event and other events via Sit-n-go’s. Or you can play one of the many mega satellites (however the structures are bingo ish). Or you can try your luck online.

LIVE SATELLITES AT THE RIO DURING THE WSOP - for a list of live satellites visit: http://www.wsop.com/2011/satellites/
4:00 PM Daily: $330 Mega-Satellite – Played as No Limit Hold'em

Best value for your money – Venetian DEEP STACK EXTRAVAGANZA III

MAY 27TH THROUGH JULY 15TH, 2011. These tournaments bring out a wide variety players (both amateur and pros). So there is a lot of dead money in the field. And the buyins for the tournaments are quite small compared to the wop events. When I play these events I shoot for the top. If you don’t finish top 10 you aren’t really going to enjoy a nice payday. So I don’t mind going broke early on.

For a schedule of the deep stack series click here.

For Deep Stack Extravaganza Blind Structures visit: http://venetian.com/Pages.aspx?id=458

Cash games – For lower limit cash games ($1/$2 nl and $2/$5) I would recommend playing where the pros won’t be found. Some suggestions would be: The Hard Rock, MGM Grand, Palms, and even the small room at the Rio. I strongly recommend you check out the small room at the Rio beside the sports book as they offer uncapped NL games.

If you are looking for bigger buyin events you will have to check out the 4 big boys (Belagio, Wynn, Venetian and Ceasars). The Rio also features a cash room during the wsop for all the limits.

Best advice: Play smart and try not to go broke. Allocate a certain amount of money for tournaments and for cash games. Don’t try to outdo yourself. If you are running bad or playing bad take some time off. If you are going down for a long period it is good to hit a gym. Most hotels have one. If they don’t you can also go to the Gold Coast and sneak in to there gym (located beside the pool).

If you have any questions feel free to give me a shout!

Cheers,

Poker in Toronto - Make it legal

So i created the following facebook group called "Poker in Toronto - Make it legal"

I thought i would post it up on the blog for all you Ontarians to take a look at!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_207228365971440&ap=1#!/home.php?sk=group_207228365971440&ap=1

The group was created to raise awareness to the fact that there is a demand for a Toronto Poker Room Year Round. Show your support and tell your friends!

I found this post online and think it is great for this group: How is it we have poker scratch tickets, a poker nightly lottery but not a single legal poker table in sight.

After closing down all the charity casino's in 2000, we were left with the CNE;s overly successful room running 3 weeks a year 24 hours a day! How long does it take for them to realize a room with one table running 12 hours a day makes 250,000 $ a year, that's just one table and thats a low 3/6% table with a 6$ hourly session fee.The day they open a legalized room is the day 75% or more of the illegal underground room's go under and out of business within our city.

Besides providing a huge number of job's opening a room within the city the revenues and taxes paid by a room far outweigh any drawbacks. From servers, pit bosses , crew chiefs, dealers , extra security we replenish some of the jobs lost by the city's "slot barn" run by woodbine entertainment group when the token's were done away with. Amazing how over 3000 slot machines is all apparently o.k, but an actual game which gives knowledgeable player's a chance at winning or at least losing much less money more slowly has taken so long to adopt here . In a city of over 5 million people, where is the deal and how much longer will we need to wait? Why is Ontario always the last province to do anything? we just never seem to be in the forefront of anything at all.

Every western province has successful card rooms in almost every city . Edmonton has eight casino's all of which have at least a two table poker room. Legal poker rooms potentially could save us money in our taxes not need to raise them and facilitate cuts to various organizations due to supposed lack of funds we hear of every single day here, provide jobs and bring top level pro's to larger tournaments. bringing with them millions of spending dollars as well for our city.

Florida Gaming has realized there is a demand for poker and has poker rooms in all Horse Racing, Dog Racing facilities. Why does this not exist in Toronto?"

Enjoy

So apparently they handcuffed this guy from Montreal yesterday at West Palm Beach Kennel Club because he entered the ladies event. They said he couldn't play. After banter back and forth with security the cops came and handcuffed the guy and took him out of the poker room. It was a house rule that no men can enter the ladies event.

I thought guys enter ladies events in vegas at the wsop all the time!

In other news .. I played the $1600 main and busted on day 2 before dinner time!

Cheers.

Errol

Since i was in Florida i decided to check out the action at the 2011 WSOP event at the West Palm Beach Kennel Club.

I went with a buddy and decided to play the 350 dollar buyin. The structure was out of this world for the type of buyin tournament. We got 10k in chips and the blinds started at 25/25. It then went to 25/50 and then 50/75. I busted just after dinner with around 80k in chips. Ran ak of hearts into AA. However, i made 1300 in cash after the tournament playing 5/10 in 2 hours. So its like i finished 28th (payout for 28th place was $1305). Gota love tournaments!

All and all I had a good time and got to bet on some dog racing during the breaks!

Here are some pics from the event.

At Foxwoods for World Poker Finals Tournaments

So I arrived at Foxwoods for the world poker finals tournaments. So far I have just played some 5/10 nl cash games. The games have been great from what I have noticed however there is only 1 main game. That means you are stuck at the table once you reach the main game. The only other suggestion that I got was to leave and come back after an hour. That way you will be able to start at the must move games before making your way to the main game.

Today I will be playing a $400 buyin No limit Hold’em “Deep Stack”. You get 20,000 starting stacks and the blinds go up every 40 min.

I will let you guys know how I do and try to report back with updates on my trip!

Played Poker with Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort

So I played poker yesterday with Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. We started off playing $2/$5 nl. The game was just horrible. There were some deep stacks however most players at the table had fewer than 300 dollars in front of them (sign that the game sucks). I ended up bluffing (with 6 high) into 3 other players when one guy had quad kings. I was really not in the mood to nit it up at the $2/$5 game. So I dusted off a few hundred and encouraged the floor to open a $5/$10 game.

Anyways I encouraged Phil to come play. He was playing the $2/$5 with his dad. I was surprised to see that Phil played pretty solid once he came to the $5/$10 table.

At the $2/$5 game he was playing like the rest of the table (except me of course, hence why I dumped money). They were all limping in and hoping to catch the nuts. It was pretty tough to bluff into 5 guys who would call anything pre-flop. There was just zero fold equity.

At the $5/$10 game Kessel entered pots with raises and did a lot less limping in (good job Phil). He played a pretty solid tight ABC style game and that is usually a winning style when there are only two above average players at the table. Although he was easy to read (checked his draws, bet when he hit draws etc.) he made some good money because he woke up with the nuts like 5 or 6 times.

For a hockey player I would say he played pretty solid. When the game got shorthanded and there was only two other players left at the table he immediately picked up his chips. I tried to convince him to keep playing however he told us that we would just crush him (I didn’t blame him for wanting to leave).

Half of the table didn’t know who he was. But when they found out they started chatting him up. Phil was very nice about it. Seems like a good all around kid. He even hinted that the Toronto Maple Leafs will probably make the playoffs this year.

Cheers,

Errol

Poker Room Review - Seminole Hard Rock - South Florida (Hollywood)

So I recently took a trip to Florida and played quite a bit at the Hard Rock!

About the poker room: The two story poker room has 48 tables.

Pros: The room was bumping at 2am on a Tuesday (no tournament series going on). All tables except one were in use for cash games on the bottom floor. I thought this was amazing. In fact I have yet to see any poker room this packed (I was told that only the Commerce was the only poker room busier in the country). The quality of play was much lower than anywhere I have seen in a while. Heck Mike Matusow called the local players in Florida “Terrible”. I played the $5/$10 nl game while I was there. The buy-in was $500 to $2000. Almost all the players bought in for over 1k. I am used to playing live where the buy-in is $200 to $1000. So it was refreshing to see this great structure.

The Hard Rock does a lot of things to make the low stakes players happy. They have a lot of low stakes tournaments going on all the time. in addition, they even have a bad beat jackpot that is shared with the other Seminole properties in Florida. It starts back up at 100k once it is hit.

There was a hi-stakes room where they played $10/$25 nl and higher. You can frequently catch Florida pros in there. While I was there I saw Michael and Robert Mizrachi, and David Chino Rheem. I even saw Canadian pro Nenad Medić playing PLO.

Cons: The room is fairly old and could use a little work. I found the room to be fairly dark. I visited the Pompano Isle poker room and there was clearly a difference. The Isle is a modern poker room that is just gorgeous inside.

The staff at the Hard Rock did their best however they could have controlled the room a bit better. The one thing I noticed that it took forever to get a table change. New players would enter tables before people who had requested a table change. The dealers were great however some were socializing with the regulars a bit too much.

Overall Impression: A great poker room with great action. Playing poker at the Hard Rock just feels right. It has non-stop action and is the place to play poker in South Florida. I will be back soon enough!

I am in Floriday playing a few tournaments with a buddy of mine. We have been playing a lot at the Hardrock in Hollywood however we decided to check out the Pompano Park Casinos - Isle Casino. I have been playing for a few hours with this pro named Tristan "CRE8IVE" Wade. He took me in a pretty big pot where i got pretty badly coolered. I had A10 and called a raise from Tristan of 35 in the small blind. Flop came k104 rainbow. Turn was a 10. I check raised and he shoved. He turned over pocket Kings.

I was pretty titled and in the game for 2500. I had lost my first buyin for 1k and then rebought for 1500. I lost yet another pot to Tristan when i 3 bet him preflop out of the big blind with 46 clubs. flop came 9J4 rainbow. I checked he checked. Turn was a 10 of spades leaving 2 spades on the board. I checked he bet 3/4 pot and i called.. river was an offsuit 6. I checked hoping he would bluff a missed backdoor flush draw or missed straight draw (aq, qk type hand). he bet like close to full pot i called and he showed me 910 suited for a higher 2 pair.

Ok so on to this hand that is blog worthy.

The game was pretty nitty. However there were a lot of older players (35+) at the table who were pure stations. And they were playing very ABC poker. So it was worth sticking around. I am in the big blind with J6 of spades. Tristan made it 35 to go after threre was a limper up front. A guy who just sat down called the 35 and I called out of the small blind. I normally would never play this type of hand out of the big blind but i was pretty tilted ( I was really just having a bad session and should have called it a day or at the very least table changed). The early limper called as well.

The flop came out J88 rainbow. I checked, player to my left checked Tristan "CRE8IVE" Wade checked from mid position and the new guy checked on the button. The new guy was in his early 40's and this was his 2nd or third hand played.

The turn came J. There was still no flush draws on the board. I checked, 2nd guy checked and Tristan made it 60. The new guy from the button called and i just smooth called. I figured that the only hand that would call a re-reaise here was with a J or with an 8. The likely hood that Tristan would have checked the flop with an 8 or J was very slim as he was playing very solid aggressive. However Tristan could have had an overpair. A check raise in this position would just look too strong at this point. I was putting the new player on a 8 or a J as . Most of the time donks tend to play their big hands very slow and lose a lot of value from there hand. However I had yet to see this guy play a single hand. So there was a good possibility that this guy could have been smoothing the turn with an open ended type hand (9 10) as he may have thought Tristan was just trying to pick up the pot by leading on the turn.

River card came Q. At this point the pot was approx 300 dollars. I checkced because my hand was pretty disguised and figured that Tristan or the new guy would take a stab at the pot. Tristan with air or the new guy with an 8, a jack or a made straight. I could have bet out an amount like 250 but i thought that the line i took in the hand would have only goten a call from a J and maybe an 8 from the new guy. Tristan checked behind me and the new guy bet 125 which i called. I didn't want to re-raise here because I didnt want to have to call another 900 (whcih i had behind) with the chance that the new guy was holding a JQ. The guy would have still made the all in play with a naked J in his hand if i would have re-raised him. Smoothing the $125 would also leave room for Tristan to overcall. As the 125 is like 1/3 of the pot.

What makes this hand interesting is that Tristan came over the top for 400 more. The new player took a few seconds and very quickly called the 400 more. At this point I put Tristan on having QQ in his hand and the new player having called with a J. So i was only beating a bluff from Tristan, At very least i thought that i was going to chop the hand. 400 to win a pot of approx 1470 (525+525+125+300). I ended up folding pretty fast.

I was amazed with Tristan turned over AQ for a 2 pair Q's and Jacks with an Ace kicker. He obviously turned his hand into a bluff. The new guy turned over 910 for a straight and the winner.

As I was tilted from the entire session previous to this hand I didn't even think about how the whole hand went down. i just figured that there was no way in hell that the new guy would call with out a jack and that Tristan would have done this with AIR or a hand that he turned into a bluff.'

I didnt even think that I needed to win the hand 1 in 3.6 times to break even in the long run. And that i was going to chop some of the time.

Tristan was nice enough to tell the table that he put the new guy on a straight and me on an 8 because of how trappy I played the hand.

Moral of the story is do not play tilted. You need to thnk about every street previous to the river and put the hand together and figure out what the other players are putting you on. If i hadn't been on tilt i would have snapped made the call. I had to the way I played the hand. I had zero info on the player and i knew that tristan would have never checked the flop with a J or an overpair. He would also never have bet a hand like qq on the turn. Too many hands crush him. So if he had quade 8's or somehow checked the flop with QJ then i should have paid him.

I ended up instantly moving to a new table where i cashed out 4200. 1700 up on the session.

If you think you have seen it all when it comes to the game of poker you have to hear this story.

A few nights ago I was playing a $5/$10 nl holdem cash game at the Rio. The game has a $400 min buy-in and has an uncapped maximum. I was sitting in the 9 seat (game is 9 handed). In an un-raised pot with about 3 limpers and the blinds the flop came out 10s 4c Jc. There was a bet of $30 dollars and two callers. The turn brought the 10s. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I have heard stories of this crap happening but to actually see it for my own eyes. Everyone’s money was given back to them that were in pre-flop. The floor was immediately called and instantly grabbed the deck from the dealer. They did not even count the deck down in front of the players. They didn’t want to alert us if we were playing with more than 52 cards in the deck.

(I did not take the picture. It was taken by a middle aged gentleman that was sitting in seat 7. He kindly emailed me the picture upon request)

One of the floors had this to say when asked if he has ever seen this type of thing before. “Apparently this sort of thing happens more often than you think”. A European kid from Belgium (who was stuck multiple thousands of dollars in the game) had previously lost to a set of 10’s about an hour before the duplicate tens were spotted. He wanted the floor to give him his money back that he lost in the game. An older gentleman who was also stuck in the game was also complaining that he wanted his money back. Fat chance bud! The floor gave the older guy the card of the gaming commissioner.

The player in seat two who crushed the Belgium kid in the 4k + pot (with a set of 10’s) came in to the game from a broken table. People at the table suggested that he might have brought in the duplicate ten of spades.

I have to say that the floor handled the situation pretty good. I would have liked to see what cards were missing from the deck and the amount of cards we were actually playing with. They didn’t give us the satisfaction of finding out any info on this matter. I assume they had a few good reasons for this.

I have been playing cash for the past few years at the rio during the WSOP. I have have to say that the floor that covers the late night shift (which heads in to the early morning) do a great job. They are pretty strict but these guys know the rules across the board.

Cheers,

Errol
