Turning a corner?

February 15, 2011, 2:27 am

well now, its been a while. Ive lost, ive lost and ive lost some more. I have started to win though i think, though with only 5954 hands played as hero 3 its uncertain whether thats just a blip to my losing trend. I know i'm still terrible at hand reading but I am playing more selective aggression based on my opponents stats.

Hours Played Hands USD $USD/hr USD EV VPIP PFR 3bet Agg Factor WTSD$ W$SD
As Hero 1 44.65 4580 -99.02 -2.22 -90.66 28.5 16.2 4.1 3.38 24.6 30.2
As Hero 2 392.25 80762 -313.98 -0.8 -304.56 20.1 15.2 3.6 2.2 32.8 46.6
As Hero 3 25.53 5954 16.74 0.66 27.53 20.5 15.7 3.8 1.44 37.7 53.3

  • Hi Widge, I have a question, what stakes are you playing at? Cliff
  • widgewilliams
  • very tiny microstakes Cliff :) $4 buyin 0.02/0.04 blinds. I'm playing on partypoker, but am thinking i'll need to play somewhere else. Its getting quite tough to find loose passives to play with. Tables usually full of TAGs, Nits, and Maniacs. Right now there are 231 players at the tables at these stakes, and only 1 fish :(

  • Hi Widge, nice to see you are using stats. Just like for myself, its a big puzzle how to improve my game. When I have a look at your stats, it seems that your WTSD is a bit high and your w$SD is a bit low. If you see too many showdowns this will have a negative impact on your winrate. How are your cbet and agression stats? Im not an expert but maybe you should be more agressive and calling less? I love maniacs at my table. They keep the games juicy, although they can give you hard times too! Good luck!

  • Hi Legian, Regarding WTSD and W$SD. Yes, they have definately been too high/low in the past but seem to be approaching more optimal figures in the last 6000 hands or so. I've been having to play abit more passively than i would like at times due to constantly being called when i have TPTK or 2 pair and i think i still have the best hand but am not sure and want to get to Showdown cheaply. My cbet will get raised or my flop raise will get called, likewise if i two barrel, and im left wondering if im up against a set or better. Cbet and Aggression stats... Over all hands: Cbet:74.1% Agg: 2.20 Flop Agg: 2.94 Turn Agg 1.72 River Agg: 1.18 I've changed names three times on partypoker now. As Hero 1: Cbet: 85.2% Agg: 3.38 Flop Agg: 4.16 Turn Agg: 2.48 River Agg: 2.67 As Hero 2: Cbet: 74.5% Agg: 2.20 Flop Agg: 2.94 Turn Agg: 1.72 River Agg: 1.17 As Hero 3 (current): Cbet: 60.2% Agg: 1.44 Flop Agg: 2.04 Turn Agg: 1.19 River Agg: 0.61 My Cbet and Agg currently feel too low but i'm looking at their fold/call/raise stats by street when deciding whether to cbet, 2barrel etc especially with marginal hands. hehe, and ive lost my last 12 AA pf ai shoves

  • Widge, I played a long time at those stakes and with lots of limpers ( I am guessing you have that at Party, I can't play there as I am U.S. ) Your VPIP may be a little high and your PFR a little low. I found 16/14 about optimal. Of course if the table is tight you need to loosen up. I think your stats would be OK at 10NL except the PFR is a little low. At 4NL or 5NL you need to tighten up as you will almost always get a caller. After the flop you need to BELIEVE your opponents if you get a lot of resistance. I think notes are as important as stats. People will start to change their game as they improve and with a large number of hands you may not notice the change due to stats. Also someone may be on tilt etc. Stats are important but don't get blinded to good ABC poker by totally concentrating on stats. Once you catch on to the style at those stakes it should go much better for you. That was my experience. Cliff

  • I do think that went to showdown should be around 25%. Won at showdown about 50%. I think you should be a little more agressive at flop turn and river. This will cause you to win more pots before you go to showdown. Im not sure what are ideal agression stats but something like 3.5/2.5/2 (flop/turn/river) would be nice. If you are affraid of people that wont fold read Hockeyguys post in the topic 'how not to pay off the donk'! He explains that you should bet your made hands and he explains why. good luck! Erik

  • hi widge the main thing i see is as hero 2 where most hands were played your wtsd is WAY too high, which no doubt lowers W$SD WTSD should be around 24-26 or so, mine is consistently 23-24% from 10nl to 200nl and W$SD is consistenly around 52% ( i would probably be better off if wtsd was a point or 2 higher even though it would lower my W$SD abit, but thats a different topic) having WTSD at 32% means you are going to SD about 25-30% too often (32% sd you - 25% standard= 7%, but 7%/25%= 28% more than standard). This is almost certainly the cause of most of your losses since most other stats aggr etc look fine Try make decision earlier in hand to avoid taking weak hands to showdown. ex if i have QTo heads up on a AQx flop, i would typically make 1 Cbet or call 1 bet on flop(depending on position and preflop aggression) while i have decent implied odds( i can get the 2 bigger steets of value when i hit), but if i dont improve i am done. Notice picking up a gut draw on turn is rarely enough to put more $$$ in pot unless opponent makes wussy small bet on turn. hope this might help HG
