about multi-tabling...

Postby legian62 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 5:27 pm

Hi Guys,

every now and then I read stories about people playing 6, 12 or even 24 tables simultanously. Im used to playing at one table at a time and have been trying to multitable for a couple of times. Im wondering how people can keep up their winrate while playing so many tables. Also Im wondering how people can keep track of their opponents when they have windows (tables) popping up all the time. It seems for me I have a huge adventage when I can focus on one table at a time. Mostly I'm playing on my old computer screen, there's no room for four windows, unless I minimize the tables but my eyes would have to work to hard to see everything.

Lately I've been experimenting playing two tables on my flatscreen tv. I can put two big windows next to eachother. Im wondering about experiences from other members. I especially like to hear about peoples experiences playing with pop up tables. Any valuable tips for a beginning multi-tabler are also appreciated. Im using Holdem Manager and mainly focusing on the preflop stats. Im thinking of playing two tables for a while until I get the hang of it and then try 3 and later 4 tables on my tv.

Greetings, Erik

When you multitable you mostly rely on a tracker program (Like Hold em manager) and notes. I play up till 20 tables on the weekends. On weekdays i mostly play between 8-12 tables. I play on my laptop and have a 24" screen hooked to it. So i can tile 12 tables on my screen and i can tile 9 more on my laptop. I usually don't tile on 2 seperate screens, because i want to focus on 1 screen. So When i play more then 12 tables I cascade them, so the table where i have to act pops up.I use my laptop screen to run hold em manager and have pokerstove ready when i need it.

The bid advantage of playing more tables is: You play more hands. If you play more tables your winrate goes down though. So I make less bb/100 hands, but i play more hands ;) So my hourly winrante goes up. You can only mass multi table when you are beating the level you play on pretty good. On 20 tables I am not playing my perfect game anymore, and I will miss a decent amount of spots where i could make money. But because I am still beating on 20 tables i will play as many tables as possible. Also rakebake is a big advantage when you play alot of tables.

But before you go mass multitabling. Start playing on 2 tables and see if things don't go too fast for you. If you want to play more tables you should slowly build up to this. Keep adding 1 table more and 1 table more. and eventually you will learn how to play alot of tables at the same time

Hi Mort,

thanks for your reply. Which HEM stats are you focusing on mainly because I cannot imagine that you have time to sort a player out while you are playing 12 or more tables. Also I understand there's software available to make your job easier, like tableninja. Are you using this? And if not, why not?

When im playing two tables 90% of the time I have no trouble keeping up. My preflop game is solid. However sometimes I get in a tough spot. If this happens at both tables at the same time I need to learn to keep my cool and take my time. That will come with experience i suppose.

cheers

You have programs that can help you multitabling like tableninja and auto hotkey.. I thought about using this, but than i didn't. Guess I am just lazy lol.. I am not sure those programs work on full tilt though. I do know they work on stars..

I gotta try it sometime :)

Hi Erik,

I play two tables mostly and have begun to play three. Though I play mostly for fun I am serious about my game. The primary reason for me to play more than one is because if I am not getting any cards for quite awhile I tend to push the action and play hands I should not because of card value or position. I have experimented with four tables but do not have time to really think about what I am going to do in certain tough spots or have a plan for the hand.

One of the skills you need when multitabling is to recognize common repeating situations and know what you are going to do so you can simply act w/o thinking about it. a couple obvious examples are if you flop a set, you know you are betting or raising, or if you flop a pair w/ the nut flush draw, you knowing you are betting or raising and are willing to get it all in if the chance arises. The good multitabling players are able to instantly recogonize all kinds of profitable situations and act quickly, their action may not be the most profitable for every situation, but their EV is still positive. The better you are at quickly and accurately recognizing whether a sitituaion is profitable the mre tables you can play and win at.

If you are just starting out and are trying to work new concepts into your game you will need to find your own comfort level for number of tables you can follow. Personally i think 2 tables works best to start as you can easily get both on your screen and follow all the action even if you are out of the hand, you get enough hands to prevent boredom so you arent tempted to play weak hands, but not so many hands you dont have think to think about your actions. As you improve you can add tables as you are comfortable.

Personally, i will play up to 8 tables at full ring games since the games are tighter and slower moving than 6 max. i dont like more than 4 tables at 6 max games as it makes it more like work instead of an enjoyable hobby. However if you are playing for a living like Morten it makes sense.

When I'm multi-tabling sngs or MTT SNGS, I usually play between 20-30 at a time.

I DONT use holdemmanager or anything similar which may surprise people. But reads etc are not as important in these games as they are in MTTs and Cash games so long as you are confident in your push/fold ability.

My advice would be to just practice 2 tabling for a while. Drop limits to begin with because you WILL lose some. But just keep practicing and eventually you will get used to it.

When you start to win consistantly, drop down again and add a 3rd. And so on.

Hi all,

last couple of months I've been playing 25nl to practise multi tabling. I started at two tables, after a while I went back to my original 50nl. A bit later went back to 25nl to play 3 tables. I have been there for a while and now im ready to move to 50nl again playing 3 tables.

As I dont have a lot of time to play poker Im happy now that im multi tabling at least I can play enough hands to build my bank roll quicker. Also now that im playing more hands I get to see more patterns. By this I mean common mistakes other people make but also my own weaknesses.

Now that Im heading back to 50nl Im thinking of buying some hands to fill up that stats. Can anyone tell me where to find handhistories for Playersonly? I believe they are at the Merge network.

cheers, Erik
