Another Small Pair out of position

Postby IAMINARUTT » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:31 pm

Here is another hand with a small pair that I am just playing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

I open raised in SB. Got popped by the big blind who had popped me multiple times this session and was very aggressive. I thought his range was very wide. Whats the correct play here? Fold?

I just dont know what to do with these small pairs out of position. Holdem Manager Leak Finder tells me that "my strategy of calling raises with small pairs and suited connectors is not working."

I suspect that perhaps I am making too many of what HockeyGuy refers to as Hero calls.

Sorry for the newbie questions. I'm watching the videos and picking up tips as I go but sometimes it helps to talk thru these hands. Although I probably seem like a complete donk to you guys.

Button ($10)
Hero (SB) ($4.90)
BB ($4)
UTG ($1.80)
MP ($4.65)
CO ($11.05)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7Image, 7Image
4 folds, Hero bets $0.30, BB raises to $0.70, Hero calls $0.40

Flop: ($1.40) 10Image, 10Image, 10Image (2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks

Turn: ($1.40) 3Image (2 players)
Hero bets $0.80, BB calls $0.80

River: ($3) 8Image (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $1, Hero calls $1

Total pot: $5 | Rake: $0.20

Results:
Hero mucked 7Image, 7Image (full house, tens over sevens).
BB had 8Image, AImage (full house, tens over eights).
Outcome: BB won $4.80

Thanks

the first thing here is stack size, you should try to always be full stacked

medium pairs play poorly with partial stacks -you had 4.90
and against partial stacks-he had 4.00

in general with medium pair you want to win preflop or on flop w/ a cb , all over cards are scary- so you dont want more cards to come and cause you to make decisions. Also you want to play with full stacks vs full stacks you can get max value when you hit set

in this HH his 3 bet is too small, depending on what his previous reraise and hand value was in the previous reraises
you mentioned, i would have 4 bet pushed if he made weak raises w/ weakish hands or folded if he liked to make smaller raises w/ stronger hands due to your stack sizes. FYI- bet size patterns are a huge and common tell in the micro games. If he had made a 3x raise i would have folded regardless due to stack sizes.
i'd have to figure he has 2 overs and it is a coin flip or he has a bigger pr and i am crushed vs bigger pr
Also i would have bet more on flop like 1.2 or 1.4 to try to end the hand AND not offer decent calling odds and implied odds based on your stack sizes.

in general calling 3 bets is a losing play (especially oop since it harder to get to showdown) w/ med/small prs- the only times i do it if someone w/ a deep stack makes a small 3 bet(a horrible play by them) to go set mining, or if they are a total maniac that has and will bluff off his stack. In which case i prefer the maniac to be a partial/short stack to prevent them from making big river bet that i have to make a tough decision

if you are really losing badly playing certain hands oop, just dont play them until you have a better plan and can make better decisions, it will come as other parts of your game improves, thats what i did. it was amazing how much my winrate improved when i stopped making bad plays.
