My badrun/badstreak at microstakes. Bad luck or bad play?

Postby johanw » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:46 am

Hello everyone!

I would want to share with u my (how I perceive it) bad run/bad streak. I love any constructive comments from anyone! :D

I love your trainingvideos and have watched alot of them. Special thanks to Hockeyguy and Atta22, have watched your videos mostly. 8-)

I restarted my bankroll about 3 month ago at 30$. (I took out 320$ of my old bankroll of 350$ for needed purposes ;) )

I play on ongame network and I worked my way upp from 4$ buy-in to 30$ buy-in in 2 month with following "level-moveup-movedown" plan.
For example I did move up to 10$-buyin when I had 70$ and I would move down to 4$-buyin when I did get below 50$.

4$ - 0-70 $
10$ - 50-140 $
20$ - 100-280 $
30$ - 200-420 $
50$ - 300-700 $
100$ - 500-1400 $

I perceive my badrun as moving steady up in limits to 30$ buyin and then got alot of bad luck in my all-ins (as u can se at the
"All-in-EV graph" last this post). Now im on the boring 4$ tables and grind. My intension is to continue playing as I have done.
The reason I still play when I have "Amount won" -47$, is becuase I have got some affilliate bonuses. Today my bankroll is on 65$.

I will paste stats from Pokertracker and explain them shortly. If there is any stats thats missing that u want to see just tell me!
Click on the image to "get the whole picture" :D

bad run summary and stats.jpg
My summary and stats. As u can see there are several limits as the same stakes. Thats because the ongame Network
did change their client for some reason and pokertracker red this as different limits. So the "0.30 NL" and "$0.30 NL"
limits are the same.

bad run positions.jpg
My positional stats. A stat that has increased the last month (when I have climbed back) is my losses on the small blind.
My intention is to play tight in the SB but when I have looked at my played hands with losses at SB I have had alot of
bad luck with premium hands from that position. Comments on this and my conclusion? Maybe I should tighten up really
much and see what happens?

bad run graph.jpg
My "All-in EV graph. As u can see, the last month my All-ins where I mostly was, a big favorite, did not went my way.

Hi Johan!

Can't say much about your play without some HH samples but as you are aware you are loosing a lot of money in the SB and BB. I had the same problem, too much calling and playing out of position, especially in the SB. Of course your SB and BB will show some loss sometimes when your premium hands get sucket out on the river. I convinced myself that I had pot odds to call, say if everyone limped and I complete in the SB with garbage hands, and it's only ½ blind. But we have a saying here in Sweden.... many small streak eventually make a big river. Let's say you play NL10 so to complete the SB is $0.05. If you play 10.000 hands per month, that would be $500 down the drain. Also I couldn't see the complete image but it looks like you are loosing money on NL30 and not on NL4 - NL20, is that correct?

Everytime I have a bad streak at NL10+, I go down and play at NL4 because I find it almost impossible to loose at those stakes. I lot of people have no clue what they are doing there. They take stupid all-in chances with very low chance to win, go all-in on flop with top pair and deuce kicker, and you have people there who are just there to have some fun and don't care if they loose their $4 buy-in. I play there for a few days and win a few buy-ins per day which makes me happy again and then I go play at NL10+ again with a much better head. No tilt that is :-)

Cheers,
Kris

Btw, I was railbirding a 6-max NL2000 game the other day and this guy joins the table with full buy-in. In his first hand he raises all-in preflop. I thought, what a stupid play, he just advertised his pocket AA and he will probably not going to get called. But he did get 2 calls. I was like WTF??!! The PFR had K7o :o , the two callers had K4s and QTo. Oh my god, crazy play! So he got stacked and bought in for another 2k. Again he goes all-in preflop. This time with K2o and again he gets calls by one of the two callers who called the previous time and a another caller. The callers had KTo and A8s. He gets stacked a second time. So now he buys in for 1k and surprise surprise, he is all-in preflop again with A8o and gets called by AKo. No win this time either. So 5 minutes later and $5000 poorer, he goes away. I think he was probably both drunk and stinking rich to be able to do something like that.

Hey kcapson!

Im glad for your words and I know the swedish saying :P Im a swede myself!

Yes, I gut some heavy blows at the 30buyin tables and have won on the 4,10 and 20. But I have lost and moved back all the way to 4$ again and I perceive it as mostly bad luck. Perhaps my play at the blinds and some bad luck have been a bad combination.

I will tighten up more at these lower stakes in the blinds from here on and will post in this post again after some months. With new stats aswell.

Hehe, that 2000-6max tableu talked about. Insane

Ha de gott!

I kind of thought you were from Sweden. Not many Johan elsewhere I think :)

Poker is sick most of the times I think. Like today I was playing for over 4 hours and at first I was down a few buy-ins, then worked my way up again to even steven, then down a bit again. Really no hands what so ever. When I did get a hand, I missed and my Cbets were not working, not even on dry flops. But I kept playing. Then finally I got some hands and managed to work my way on the plus side again. Phew... hard work but it payed off to keep working.

Good luck in the future!

Ha det gött du med!

Cheers,
Kris
