Bet Sizing

Postby IAMINARUTT » Mon Apr 05, 2010 7:25 pm

I'm interested to hear comments on bet sizing on the flop (and the turn). I flopped two pair on a draw heavy board with two other players seeing the flop and I suspect that my bet on the river was two small to discourage people from drawing.

How would you have played it?

UTG ($2.70)
Hero (MP) ($19.05)
CO ($6)
Button ($19.65)
SB ($7.30)
BB ($10.45)

Preflop: Hero is MP with JImage, QImage
1 fold, Hero bets $0.40, 1 fold, Button calls $0.40, 1 fold, BB calls $0.30

Flop: ($1.25) JImage, 8Image, QImage (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.80, 1 fold, BB calls $0.80

Turn: ($2.85) 6Image (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $1.50, 1 fold

Using my limited knowledge of PokerStove I worked out that against two opponents with a club draw and a straight draw (i.e. Ac5c and 9h9d) I am around 50:50 so I suspect that it would have made more sense to bet closer to the pot. Is this correct?

while it is a draw heavy flop. that doesnt mean everyone flopped a draw, it is possible but not likely especially when you think about what villians raise calling ranges were based on their stats, position, previous play.

basically 2 ways to go,
bigger bets to charge draws -typically vs chasers/stations
or smaller bets vs tighter plays and hope for a blank on turn before you force the action- you leaned this on this hand
your bet size may also depend on your position in the hand
i generally defaulted to larger bets at the lower micros due to the chasing donksthat would call very light

once button folds flop, then you are in position and in better shape to extract max value

given both folded before river goes to my point that just because draws are out doesnt mean opponents have them
obviously button had squadoosh, i would imagine bb had a gut shot or maybe a gut shot with a lone club an they gave up when gut missed and no club hit to improve their hand- or some other weakish draw

notice this hand also shows a point i made before, if they have a hand they call, if they dont they fold, bb folded to 1/2 pot bet so i assume he had very little by turn card. so it is hard to say if bet size was "perfect", i dont think it was significantly wrong, although i would have bet $1.80 to 2.20 myself in case button did have good draw to chase with and if he was a known chaser.
