Correct play

Postby TepelStreeltje » Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:25 am

Been thinking about this hand for a few houres. Don't have the correct handhistory because i'm not at home.
I isolated opponent UTG+1 limp/called my PFR 5$ (100NL game). Both players full stack.
I hold KcQc on button
pot is 13$

Flop comes Th Js 9c
Opponent bets 13$.
I push AI
Opponent calls and holds 99.

Turn brings another J and i'm drawing dead.
I'd like to consider this a bad beat, but would like to know if some of you would play it differently. I could have reraised or just called the flop, but i don't believe i would go away after the turn.

Hey Tepel,

now, i'm not a cash game player by trade but looking over the hand from how you desrcribed it, you can definitely chalk this one down as a bad beat.

Your aim here is to get all of your opponents chips in as soon as possible seeing as you have the best hand.

You haven't discussed stack sizes so i'm assuming that you bought in full stack. IMO, I think the flop shove is a bit mehhhhhh, a raise would have done the same trick and the nittier of players would often fold bottom set when you do that. However it does look kind of disguised as a QJ type of hand where you're superstrong so I suppose there is some merit in playing the hand as you did.

Chalk it up to a bad beat, move on and hope your straight holds next time.

yes, I definitly wanted to get all my chipsin as soon as possible. I also had stats from apr 500 hands about my opponent and was pretty sure he would call my push with 2 pair or a set.
The guy did exactly what I wanted him to do. Just wanted to be sure if it was the right thing to do without making stupid plays.
But the more I think about it the more i'm concinced I didn't do anything stupid in the hand.

i agree w matt

cash games(especially the lower stakes) are about gettin it in while you are ahead- aka value betting
you did want you wanted, just got unlucky

if i asked you before the hand if you flopped the stone cold nuts and you could get your opponents entire stack in on the flop when you know you are at worst case a 2/1 fave over a flush draw or a set and have all other hands in even worse shape.

what would you say?

an important thing to remember is there are times when a player might be willing to get more $ on flop , but a scare card comes and they shut down- for instance qj on a qj5 flop, if a T hits on turn, or if they have top pair and a str8 draw, but a 3 flush hits turns that doesnt make their str8, they sometimes shut down. also a scare card could cause you to slow down giving them a chance to hit river and beat you with a runner runner flush type thing

in this case the guy is typically never going away, but i always try to remember it isnt about 1 hand, no matter how frustrating that hand was

better luck hg

You got all the money in the middle with the absolute nuts. That's absolutely the ideal situation. It's too bad that you got sucked out on but it happens. Slowplaying and seeing a turn and river is NOT a good idea, because you will lose value way too often when scare cards for your opponent hit (ie. in this situation any K, Q, 8 would definitely scare him) or if you don't manage to build the pot large enough.

In the long run you will show a monster profit in these situations. Well played.
