hand discussion.

Postby JimmyChances » Tue Mar 02, 2010 4:16 pm

This hand occured just recently on PokerStars, I'm JimmyChances and the villain is Jolonpoika.
This guy was a bit of a rock and for a long time had VPIP 7% and PFR 7% stats, at this point it had upped to
VPIP 14%
PFR 13%
i hadnt seen him bluff at all up to this point.
His Limp call from the small blind suggested weakness but his raise on the flop was anything but, but my hand was too strong to fold here.
By the time it got to the river i was trying to think of a hand i could beat that he would have played this way, i thought Ace jack he would have raised with preflop,
it felt to me like he had hit a set.i hadnt seen him play a flush draw but at the 10-25c level on pokerstars it seems that most players are check calling til they hit so i couldnt put him on the busted flush. the 8 on the river also seemed like a horrible card to me and made my hand seem even weaker.
Was my fold on the river correct do you think. or was my play too weak. Any info on how i could have played this hand better would be great thanks.

I've had a couple of horrible sessions. People seem to be rivering flushes all the time and Ive had my aces beaten 4 times on the spin now.

let start at the end and work backwards on this

what can he have that beats you on the river
AA KK QQ 88 Q9 97,
looking at probabilities, i rule out JJ and TT since you have JT
i also rule out 88, if a guy makes quads i am not generally smart enough to not pay it off
22 if he called flop and hit turn, tuff to not lose chips-seems unlikely though given rockish stats
now what can he have that he played the way he did
q9 and 97 seem unlikely, but some Tightish players will limp/call w an occassional Q9s or 97s hand in a blind battle
AK possible, AK of hearts makes sense postflop, but limp preflop not so much
9h X? has str8 and flush draw, hard to see what the X might be, you have Jh and a T, other X make flopped str8 or rag unlikely to call raise
this leaves AA KK QQ, all of which are semi commonly sloplayed by many tightish/tricky/weak players at this level
AA are Aces so they think they are gold, KK figures they are ahead of a drawy flop, QQ figures they are ahead and have gut draw

several hands are unlikely, but do happen, almost all other likely possiblilities took lead when 8's paired
what can you beat on river, AK or a bluff/missed draw 9h X?

my read is AA KK QQ sloplayed and made top 2 pr river, and you were beat - i like the fold in spite of good pot odds vs a rockish player

as to playing differently,
i would have reraised flop and been prepared to get it in when i was ahead of most of his range, top 2 pair in a heads up raised pot is good enough for me to stack off. If i just called flop raise hoping for a blank turn, i would have gotten it allin when the duece/blank hit when i was still ahead of most of his range

thats my 2 cents gl hg

oops

i forgot AJ, i discount it a bit due to 2 Jacks being out
some tightish/weak players will limp an AJ type hand in the sb or bb and then overplay tptk thinking they trapped you
i dont think i could give enough credit to it to call the river though, especially since you had Jh

i also forgot Ah8h, he couldnt have AhTh or AhTh, but of course Ah8h beat you on river as well

but since his aggression started on flop i give him credit for a made hand, 7% vpip 7%pfr types dont typically get real frisky
w/ draws, that brings him back to big overpairs
