Maniacs nits and Tags

Postby colfarrell » Tue Jan 25, 2011 11:25 am

Hey all..

Just a very quick question for Tim and the trainers regarding playing style in cash games..

I mainly grind micro sng's but enjoy playing cash aswell, but mainly to take a break from the sng's.
I would definately play taggy through the sng and depending on stack size open up accordingly.

With the recent video by Tim on adapting to player style, I am just wondering which category we would fall into with the style been taught, obviously we're not nits or Maniacs, so is it fair to say the style is Taggy regular also? and adapting to players like ourselves is part of the game..

Or would you put a different name on it?

Thanks,
Col.

Hi Col,

You are correct in that we would fall under the TAG (tight-aggressive) category. However, just as there are many shades of grey, there are many shades of TAG players. There are the weak-tight TAGs who play very ABC, never bluff except for a continuation bet and fold to any pressure unless they have a big hand - very exploitable. There are the faux-TAGs as hockeyguy alluded to in his earlier forum post who have no concept of positional play and are also very exploitable.

Hope this helps!

after having watching Tim's videos and trying to absorb all the thoughts he shares as he discusses hands and the various situations. I like to describe it as "a thinking TAG" style of play, there are many types of TAGS that you will run across Weak TAGS, Faux Tags, Nits etc that believe they are playing "correctly" but are pretty formulaic and can be exploited after you identify their basic formula/plan. When you watch Tim's videos he never just says If A happens, then you do B. He always thinks more widely and deeply about the entire situation and opponent(s) before he makes a decision on the best action.

I remember a post a while back when someone asked Tim when he knew it was time/he was ready to move up limits. His response was when he felt like he had a skill advantage over the regulars(aka TAGS) at his current stake level. I am following this plan as i think it makes sense and makes it an easy transition at the next level up and so far has worked very well for me so far as i have never had to move down levels once i moved up. I attribute this to the excellent content and teaching style in Tim's video and the "thinking TAG" style of play he coaches. If you avoid a formulaic approach and try to always being thinking about each hand good things happen.

I think it is similar to good SNG player that are basically TAG, but always looking for a good spot to be aggressive/make a play. That is how i learned how to play SNG's.

hope this helps

Thanks guys.. definately helps alot and its actually improved my game even in the last few days as I found I had started to become too mechanical in my sng play, and I've started to pick up a few more chips at the mid stage game by playing the hand with alot more thought, I've reduced the number of sng's at a time too which helps get into the hands more...

Nice one,
Col.
