Howdy Again Everyone

Day 26- counting days actually played

Started Bankroll $425.06 + $0.52 rakeback =$425.58

7/13 25 nl
tuesay morning results
216 hands
+$13.25
WR= 25 bb/100hands
3 tables 1.5 hrs
Ended at $438.83

I slipped a few hands before off to animal park w/ the kids. A interesting/frustrating session. Got off to good start w/ a quick double up. Sadly this was followed a series of close decisions/tough spots/hands that blew up in my face. I ended up folding in most of them, i am certain i folded best at least a couple times, but i don’t know which ones. It was the kind of session that could end up really good, or really bad, or somewhere in the middle depending how many times i called and was right or wrong. Fortunately i ended up w AA running into KK and my hand held up to continues bankroll creeping toward 500 and 50nl

I apologize for the long post i dont plan on any more this long as it took a long time to put it togethor, it would have been a great session for a video. I was trying to give the feeling and flow of the session and even though a lot of hands developed into tough decisions /didn’t turn out very well I managed to up w/ a profit at the end by being selective and patient. I think the session also shows how you can be running cold even though your AA KK etc didn’t lose big pots. There were several hands where i made a play that typically works, but none/few of them did in this session, or hands where opponents appear to have had a hand they usually don’t so that i couldn’t get them to go away, or opponents just made good plays that are not typical at this level. All of which was quite frustrating. When you are running good most of these hands will go in your direction and the session ends up very profitable, it just isn’t as memorable as when you get AA 3 times and stack a bunch of people.

I have quite a few interesting and hopefully instructive albeit frustrating hh from this session, they are in order of sequence they happened

A simple case of aggression vs an opponent whose range i think missed flop
No reason to think 86 hit sb limper after he checked (he just told you he missed flop)

if i donk out a pot bet, i only have to win 51% of time to be profitable(50% is break even) and i am only risking $2.55

but when i checkraise i risked $4.00 to win 2.55+1.91=4.87
so i have to win 4/4.87+4= 45% of the time

but if i do a 3x checkraise say 6.00
then i risk 6.00 to win 4.87
so i have to win 6/6+4.87=55%

if you make a 4x raise
8/12.87=62%

If he bets pot and you do 4x raise
Pot is 2.55+2.55=5.10
Raise is 10.2
So 10.2/10.2+5.10=59% which is a bit better than if they bet less than pot

so the bigger your check raise the more you risk AND the higher percentage you need to win to be profitable. I think it is safe to assume that a bigger raise has a better chance to get some hands to fold, the question is where is the line which is not so simple

An interesting session during the midday when i don’t normally play since it is mostly Tags and regular players, games are simply less juicy than other times of the day. No hh since they are on my other computer and previous post was quite long. I did record the first couple hours of the session so hopefully it will show up as a video or series of videos.

Howdy Again Everyone

I am quite disappointed w/ my winrate results thus far and so now seemed like a good time to look in the mirror and check my play to see if there is something (there always is) i need to change to improve my play and thereby my results. HM is agreat help when you are playing, but also away from the tables which i am sure most learning players dont look at the stats enough to look for leaks. When i go looking at the HM stats i am looking for BIG TRENDS, I am not looking to see if i played 56s poorly in a hand 3 days ago, i probably did. So i divide my results into a few basic ways. By pot size, basically big, medium, small. And then by card types pairs, Big Aces, broadway, suited Aces, non suited aces, suited connectors by no gap and 1 gap, non suited connectors by no gap and 1 gap, any other cards are going to be played from the blinds or as a steal in late position vs a tight player in the blinds so play straight forward.

So looking at results for 25nl after 5500 Hands here is what i found

Hands i won or lost over 50 bb i.e. half a stack or more
36 hands
Net winnings $72.47
HM EV for these hands $150.69, i am about half of expected winnings here
So it looks like luck has not been too kind in the bigger pots once all the money went in

Hands i won or lost over 25, but less than 50bb
47 hands
Net winnings $54.09
HM EV for these hands $66.55, i am a bit below expected winnings here
So it looks like luck has not been a friend here either, but as pot size gets smaller the EV calculation becomes somewhat meaningless since not much money is in the pot

Hands i won or lost over 10, but less than 25 bb
135 hands
Net winnings $25.84

Hands i won or lost less than 10 bb excluding blinds where i just folded and surrendered my blind
638 hands
Net winnings $84.56

Notice how much i won in the small pots by being aggressive and stealing blinds, it adds up. Nothing else especially interesting sticks out here other than it appears i have been a bit unlucky in big pots after all the money went in, this may make me feel better(and it does), but there is no defence against bad luck other than keep playing and getting it in w/ the best hand

So Lets look at pocket pairs which all should be very profitable hands
296 hands, net $237.53, 320bb/100 hands All prs show profit except 44, 33
(277bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
AA won 93% over 29 hands net $58.42
KK won 96% over 27 hands net $48.94
QQ won 90% over 20 hands net $37.71
JJ won 76% over 21 hands net $41.02

Out of 5500 hands i should get each pr 25 times so i haven’t been card dead for big pairs
Sometimes you run good and get a lot of action on your big pairs, and sometimes you don’t get action or they don’t hold up, not much you can really do here. It looks like overall results are good compared to my bodog stats at this level so lets move along

Lets look at big Aces AT+ which all should be very profitable hands
Not a pretty picture here,
260 hands, net $17.85, 27bb/100 hands
(122bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
The results at this level are quite poor losing money w/ most of these hands is not good. This will require further investigation

AKs won 61% over 13 hands net -$5.10
AK won 68% over 65 hands net -$37.55
AQs won 68% over 19 hands net $39.23
AQ won 71% over 48 hands net -$10.29
AJs won 55% over 11 hands net -$10.59
AJ won 68% over 44 hands net $15.65
ATs won 67% over 15 hands net $6.93
AT won 69% over 45 hands net $19.57

Out of 5500 hands i should get each suited hand 16 times and offsuit 48 times, so i haven’t been card dead here either, and in fact got quite a few “extra” AKo

Now Lets look at broadway hands which all should be profitable hands if played properly, which typically means in position isolating loose players
Not a pretty picture here either
402 hands, net -$84.17, -83bb/100 hands
(12bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Holy crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I kind of had a feeling that i wasn’t hitting a lot of flops or winning many decent pots w/ these type hands, but i had no idea was sucking this bad, wowsers, this will require further investigation to see WTF is going on w/ these hands

KQs won 50% over 14 hands net -$0.34
KQ won 64% over 55 hands net $0.82
KJs won 50% over 18 hands net -$7.88
KJ won 45% over 47 hands net -$23.50
KTs won 42% over 12 hands net -$17.76
KT won 42% over 61 hands net -$28.42
QJs won 60% over 20 hands net $13.85
QJ won 37% over 46 hands net -$6.87
QTs won 46% over 15 hands net $6.36
QT won 43% over 53 hands net $9.06
JTs won 53% over 15 hands net -$19.58
JT won 26% over 46 hands net -$9.91

Well it looks like we have a good idea where i am apparently playing poorly. My results for big Aces and painted cards are atrocious at best. Bur for completeness and curiosity i will take a quick look at a few other type of hands

Suited aces A9s-
122 hands, net -$8.41, -28bb/100 hands
(34 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
I have done much better in the past, so this merits a closer look as well

Non suited Aces A9o-
402 hands, net $1.42, 1 bb/100 hands
(-20 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Not great, but looks like i got bigger fish to fry at this time

sOOted connectors
No gap 9T-23
131 hands, net $4.59, 14 bb/100 hands
(-14 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Again i think plenty of room to improve, although i do see i have improved since my days at this level at bodog

1 gap
135 hands, net $77.91, 230 bb/100 hands
(-20 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Looks like i won a few big hands in here somewhere which is not uncommon with these hands so your win rate can swing a lot depending if you win a few big pots and i also see i have improved since my days at this level at bodog

Non sOOted connectors
No gap
391 hands, net -$1.36, -1 bb/100 hands
(-15 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Again i think some room to improve, although i do see again i have improved since my days at this level at bodog

1 gap
364 hands, net -$33.83, -37 bb/100 hands
(-20 bb/100 hands at bodog at this level for comparison)
Again i think plenty of room to improve, although again i do see i have improved since my days at this level at bodog

So i think this was a very useful exercise as i had no idea my results w/ big Aces and broadway hands were so sad. I think i will go golfing/beer drinking and come back later to try to see WTF i have been doing and make some changes to improve my play. The other thing that i want to point out is from Atta22 videos and several other places. You dont have to play mistake free perfect poker to beat these games, you just have to make fewer mistakes than the other players. One look at my results and my HM stats shows i can beat these games even when it is clear I have not been playing nearly as well as i can. I will post what i discover after reviewing my problem areas.

So relax, take a deep breath and enjoy trying new plays from the atta videos, they wont work every hand, but in the long run they do and you will beat these games with relative ease. It has worked for me.

Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Alrighty then upon further review here is what i found out

AK 78 hands total net -$42.75, EV $-25.30, “lost value” $17.45
Win Summary
Stacked someone once vs AQ
17 pots <11.00
17 pots <3.00
and 26 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Got stacked 4 times
TPTK vs 325 flop, turn 7, river A tptk lost to A3 two pr
TPTK vs Kh4h7h flop and a set of 444, all heart flop, i didn’t have Ah
TPTK vs 66 on a 234 flop
TPTK vs 235 flop, river tptk to AAA

I did make a good laydown w tptk vs K9 2 pair flopping rat bastard who instashoved which i believe showed up in a bankroll post

Overall I didn’t get much action from lesser Aces or weaker K so i didn’t win many decent pots vs dominated hands. On the loss side of the aisle i stacked off vs a set trying to charge any draws which is going to happen sometimes. Same thing vs Ax is going to make 2 pr from time to time, The last hand vs AA was well played by opponent, so again when an opponent has you dominated and plays the hand well it is tough to get away from the hand. The other hand vs the 66, i thought i had 10 outs but only had 6 and i missed those. So over all i am not too unhappy with my play on these hands i just think i am riding the bad side of variation where good situations just didn’t happen very often and bad ones all went bad and stayed bad (meaning i didn’t suckout as i am entitled to do from time to time just like the donks) for the maximum loss which explains the difference between actual results and the EV per HM.

A bit of math concerning the good and bad situations that comes up w/ AK. What you really are wanting is in vs a weaker Ace. Lets look at AQ for instance, the odds of 2 unpaired cards of flopping a single pair is 1/3, so just looking at AK for a moment the odds fo you pairing the A are 1/6 and the same w/ the K. (1/6 +1/6=1/3) So if AK is versus AQ and a K flops you have the other guy almost dead on most flops as they need running Q Q (about 1%), or a gut shot(1/11 or 9% per street, so about 1/5 if they see 2 cards) mostly unless a very coordinated flush or str8 flop, but you may get a street or even 2 streets of value depending on the flop/turn texture. The other guy has a 1/6 chance of out flopping your AK by hitting his 3 out kicker, in this case a Q. However you still typically have 3 outs to directly redraw on him which is not great, but is a much better situation for you than it is for him when your K hits, although you also have a 1/11 chance on each street to hit an Ace giving him 2 pr which gives him a chance to win a big pot depending on his kicker and the board texture( like what happened to me vs A3 as discussed above). Three outs has a 1/8 chance on turn to redraw and same on the river if you can see it as well, so 1/8 +1/8 is ¼ or 25% chance to redraw. So bottom line is you have equal chance to hit your non Ace cards, but the bigger kicker will have better redraw odds, especially if you are in position and can get an occasional free card.

Now lets look at the dream situation w/ AK, we want to flop an A vs another A w/ a smaller kicker. From above we know you will flop a pair of Aces 1/6 on average, but if your opponent also has an A, the chances an A will flop is reduced since there are fewer Aces left in the deck, specifically 2 Aces left instead of 3. So this reduces the odds of an A flopping from 1/6 to 1/9. But when the A hits you can generally expect 3 streets of good value since those who call with Ax DONT FOLD TOP PAIR. Of course you will have the opponent suck out 2 pr 1/8 on turn and 1/8 on river, or about ¼ overall, as well as an occasional flush or str8 and it is difficult not to lose a big pot when this happens. But In the other ¾ pots you should also be winning big pots by betting betting betting. In the long run winning ¾ of big pots shows a profit.

The point of all of this is that in reviewing my results for AK i found only 1 hand where i had AK vs a weaker Ace. This demonstrates some of the complexity of “running good” or “running bad”. When you are hot you run into a bunch of weaker aces and take them to valuetown avoiding suckouts, when you are cold you either never get a good flop vs a dominated hand or your hand doesn’t hold up. And we saw above that you wont get a good flop ( meaning the common card) vs a dominated hand that often so it takes a while, sometimes quite a while for the odds to work out in your favour.

Fyi on the long run, when you have AK, the chances someone else at a 6 max table has 1 of the other 3 aces is as follows, 3 aces left/ 50 cards left for each player * 5 players who were each dealt 2 cards= 50% (per chart in super system appendix), so looking at my AK results i should have run into a player w/ another Ace preflop about 40 times, assuming nobody can fold an A preflop i should have averaged 4 flops in that time when i had the other guy’s ace dominated on a flop that had an Ace, but since some players can fold a weak A vs a raise or 3 bet that happens when i have AK, it again shows it can take quite a while for the value hands to come out ahead. This is why you need a large sample to determine your “true” win rate since many of the big value situations don’t occur very often, remember i have a sample of 5500 hands so far, and i was only entitled to average about 4 flops w/ Ak vs a smaller Ax that would contain an Ace in the best case of nobody ever folding an Ace preflop.

Also Notice by folding your weak aces vs shows of strength vs tight raisers how long you can go without getting into a bad situation w/ your ace.

Another thing to realize is that if it is this rare to for a simple flop w/ one ace dominating another, that the chances of Ax flopping 2 pr vs your AK ( or any bigger kicker) is extremely rare so don’t be fearful, it happens but is not something to worry too much about. Especially vs a tight player with a flop like A48, but it more possible on a flop like AQ6 in a raised pot where AQ is a much more likely part of his range than A4 or A8.

AQ 67 total net $28.94, EV $50.22, “lost value” $21.28
Win Summary
Stacked someone w/ str8
1 pot 15.09
8 pots <11.00
14 pots <3.00
and 23 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Got stacked 1 times
once vs AK, very player on button razed my co, i 4 bet he shoved
I was priced in vs his range and called

Basically more hands went per plan and only 1 “bad” hand although i did lose more than my share of coin flips vs short stack which explains the difference between EV and actual results for AQ

AJ 55 hands total net $5.04, EV $47.81, “lost value” $42.75
Win Summary
Stacked someone once ajxxj brd
3 pots <10.00
10 pots <3.00
and 20 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Got stacked 1 times
Allin preflop vs 2 lags vs kj and 78, lost to K hi flop

Again most hands went w/ the odds except for the one above where i got it in vs 2 donks but got outdrawn, this one hand accounts for over 90% of the difference between EV and actual results for AJ.

1 pots <5.00
12 pots <3.00

Again most hands went w/ the odds and no big pots where i got out drawn or was dominated by a bigger kicker, so i show a decent profit so there is very difference between EV and actual results for AT.

KQ 69 hands total net $0.48, EV -$3.48, “lost value” -$3.96
Win Summary
1 stack vs a 79, 1 pair chasing donk
4 pots <8.00
12 pots <3.00
and 23 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
1 stack vs K9 2 pair flopping rat bastard- it is going to happen, but it is RARE per above
1 stack vs jj, 3347T board just another example of my poor 2 and 3 barrel timing
3 pots <5.00
8 pots <3.00

Overall I didn’t get much action from weaker K so didn’t win many decent pots vs dominated hands. Won 1 big pot vs a chaser, On the loss side of the aisle i stacked off vs 2 pr. I also picked a very dry flop to 3 barrel vs a big overpair, deep sigh for bad timing and I should have stopped after the turn. So w/ the 1 except off one 3 barrel i am not too unhappy with my play on these hands. i just think i am riding the bad side of variation where good situations just didn’t happen very often(just like AK above) and mostly played smaller pots so not much difference between actual results and the EV per HM.

KJ 65 hands total net -$31.38, EV -$30.99 “lost value” $0.39
Win Summary
No hands won more than 2.41
7 pots <3.00
and 24 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Flopped a pr on exactly 1 of these losing hands, improve on 2 more, one of which got sucked out on river for biggest loss 9.81
2 pots <10.00
3 pots <6.00
16 pots <3.00

Here i just never won a decent pot or made a decent hand vs looser opponents who made a weaker K, lower pair or chasing a draw. On the loss side i got dominated a couple times by tighter opponents, missed my draws, and a few just plain old second best hands. All of which resulted in small/medium losses that added up. Could/would i play a couple hands different if i had a chance, of course, but nothing stuck out as a huge mistake like calling 3 streets w/ an obvious probability of being dominated.

KT 73 hands total net -$46.18, EV -$26.03 “lost value” $20.15
Win Summary
3 pots <6.00
3 pots <3.00
and 25 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Stacked once w/ monster draw to nut flush and nut str8 vs 1 pr
½ stack w/ 2nd nut flush to nut flush
3 pots <7.00
16 pots <3.00, 12/16 were <1.00

I don’t expect to win a lot of medium/medium large size pots w/ KT type hands as i will typically be in a position where i am calling w/ a dominated hand. I do expect to win a bunch of small/medium small pots by isolating loose players by cbetting dry flops and having them call down w/ 2nd pr type and drawing type hands. I do expect to win an occasional big pot w/ a str8 or 2 pair vs a bigger pair or better K. Unfortunately i missed my draw here and ran into the nut flush which vs loose opponents wont typically be the case as the K hi flush will be good most times vs loosey goosey types. I hate to keep ringing the same bell, but i don’t see any huge mistakes, just a couple of the expected bad situations happened and none of the expected good situations. My missed draw accounts for the difference between actual results and the EV per HM. Big draws lead to variation as they tend to have slight advantages but are frequently played for stacks which means swings in results.

QJ 66 hands total net $6.98, EV $4.39 “lost value” -$2.59
Nothing exciting here, a bunch of tiny pots

No real insight from a bunch of tiny pots

QT 66 hands total net $15.42, EV $14.44 “lost value” -$0.98
Nothing exciting here, a bunch of tiny pots, a couple med pots that went my way w/ aggressive play

No real insight from a bunch of smallish pots

JT 73 hands total net -$29.49, EV -$29.49 “lost value” $0.00
Win Summary
All tiny wins
and 20 all folds preflop <1.50

Loss Summary
Stacked once w/ monster draw to nut flush and nut str8 vs 1 pr
½ stack w/ 2nd nut flush to nut flush
3 pots <8.00 all three missed draw but made 2nd pair for cryin call on river
12 pots <3.00,

Here is a good example of EV being wrong, but no good way to quantify. When i play JT i am frequently looking for a drawing type flop, when i get that type of flop and get in a situation where i am calling down ( i have approx 1/3 chance to hit by river typically) but when my draw busts out, the HM EV calculator gives me no credit for any EV value even though i clearly have substantial equity based on my draws chance to improve. They are working on this but it can never be perfect since there is no way they can ever know how much extra, if any, you will win from your opponent after you hit your draw to the best hand, i.e. implied odds are always an estimate, you can easily calculate the maximum implied odds available from stack sizes, but you can never know how much you will actually win as the opponent can limit that by folding w/o putting his entire stack in. So i mostly look at EV in big pots after the $$$ went in to see if best hands are holding up in big pots which is where the EV calculation is most accurate.

Suited Ace 122 hands total net -$8.41, EV -$8.45 “lost value” $0.04
Win Summary
All tiny wins, biggest 3.09
Made 1 flush (no action), no 2 pr or trips in the winning hands that saw a flop
and 22 all folds preflop <1.00

Loss Summary
Just a bunch of small losses
16 pots <5.00, 12/16 were <1.50

Non Suited Ace 100 hands total net $1.42, EV $1.42 “lost value” $0.00
Just a bunch of tiny pots, ended up a wash,

sOOted No gaps 40 hands total net $6.30, EV -$11.97 “lost value” -$18.77
basically won 1 stack w/ 2 pr, and lost a stack w/ 2 pr to a gut shot
rest of hands just small wins and losses

Sooted 1 gap 34 hands total net $57.62, EV $57.62 “lost value” $0.00
Win Summary
Won a stack w/ a flush and several medium 8.00 type pots

Non sOOted No gaps 53 hands total net $4.56, EV $4.56 “lost value” -$0.00
basically a bunch of hands with just small wins and losses

Non Sooted 1 gap 39 hands total net $-20.56, EV $-20.56 “lost value” $0.00
Win Summary
Biggest win 1.63
13 pots<1.00

Loss Summary
Lost an 8.00 pot and three 3.00 pots and a dozen pots <1.00 which added up to outweigh the lack of any decent pots won

Alrighty then after all this what have i learned
FYI-, it only takes about an hour to through all this if you are not writing up a blog, what have i discovered. If i was just doing it for myself i make a couple notes and put them in a note file i keep to review when i am running/playing bad to remind me of previous bad play items i have discovered in my game.

Overall pair hands seem to be going ok
While my Big A results look bad, i think i can make a reasonable case that AK was running cold and i simply took a bad beat in a big pot w/ AJ and those 2 things account for most of my poor results w/ big Aces- i .e. variation

My broadway results look HORRIBLE, but again i had the couple big hands i played not go my way and there is not much i can do about that. I have had many normally profitable hands just not win any decent pots, KJ biggest win was $2.41, and no other win bigger than 2 bucks. While this is a typical trouble hand, i don’t play it vs opponents that are likely to have me dominated, i just haven’t had many wins vs loose players with QJ-, JT-, Kx type hands. Anoth piece of interesting math, if 2 players have unpaired and no common cards they will both flop a pair on a flop about 1/11 times, so for instance KJ vs T9, a good flop would be KT8 giving each player 1 pair. Adding all the permutations a flopped pair of KK vs 99, KK vs TT, JJ vs 99, JJ vs TT will happen less than 10% of the time. Just another example of why the long run is so DAMNED long.

Hard to win alot of $$ with sOOted/connected type hands.

You can win a large portion of your profits in smaller pots w/ aggressive play, and variation comes from the bigger pots and can be a real bitch. Notice if i win the pot w/ KT monster draw where i am a slight favourite and the big pot w/ AJ where i was a substantial favourite my win rate over 5500 hands nearly doubles.

When you are looking at your results try to be honest with yourself about whether you are being unlucky or putting yourself in difficult spots w/ weak hands or getting unlucky in big pots with strong hands. Also be honest about any suckouts you put on others, when i am running good i hit my draws or catch a third 9 on the turn vs AA on a 724 flop and get his stack, but i know these type of things wont keep happening, and will happen to me as well in the long run.

So bottom line after all this is i feel better about my play and think i just have been running a bit cold and lost more than my share of big pots and even though 5500 seems like a lot of hands. But i would have not been as confident if i had not gone through this excercise and i will still be keeping a closer eye on the broadway hands and AK as i am still not happy about my results with those hands. The review of the math shows how rare many good situations actually occur and how the results can be affected in the short run by a couple big pots. AND PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANT HOW AGGRESSIVE PLAY AND WINNING A BUNCH OF SMALLER POTS HELP YOU WIN IN THE SHORT RUN EVEN WHEN THINGS ARENT RUNNING REALLY GOOD IN THE BIGGER POTS.

Just looking at the AK AQ AJ hands i won about 110 pots of $3.00 or less with preflop raises and flop cbets. I didnt give all the junky hands their 1/3 chance to outflop or out draw me by being aggressive. Exactly how i would win in those pots if i was passive is hard to say, but i am quite sure it is less as i was far more passive before i watched the Atta22 videos and i won a lot less back then.

I hope some of this is helpful on how to look for leaks and why the long run is so long

Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Postby hockeyguy » Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:13 am

Howdy all

I have taken a bit of a break from the challenge due to 3 double extra frustrating sessions in a row that seemingly were made up of one cooler after another to start each session that resulted in me constantly trying to dig myself out of a 3 or 4 buyin hole. While i was typically able to catch a few hands eventually and get most of the losses back. The same sequence got to be quite aggravating so i decided my mental health would be best helped by a break since i was already a bit frustrated from the results at 25nl. I do have some interesting HH from the 3 sessions that i will post shortly. i just decided to make a complete break and not aggravate myself looking at HH.

Today i decided to do a bit of math to determine how often certain hands can be expected to occurr since this typically makes me feel better. The one i was specifically interested in was my AK vs AA and have an AK hit the flop since that is how i started my last session. Me w/ AK vs AA also happen in another session a few days prior which i think i posted the HH.

Probability is not my favorite mathematical area, but i think i got this correct. Looking at the specific hand

The chances an opponent is dealt AA is 1/221, but w 5 opponents chances any of them has AA is 5/221= 1/44
normal chances i will be dealt AK is 1/110, but if someone else has AA, my chance of getting AK at the same time is reduced to about 1/330
so combined the chances i will get AK when someone else has AA is 1/44 * 1/330= 1/14520, (so 2 times in a matter 5500 hands is unlikely, having it happen over of a few sessions is very unlucky) Once the cooler hand is dealt i can get off AK pretty easy post flop if i dont improve, but am going to be in tuff shape if i do improve. The chances an Ace and King will hit the flop if AA and AK are in players hole cards is about 1/125
So when you combine the slim chances of the AA and AK both being dealt and the rare chance of the cooler flop 1/125 * 1/14520= 1/1531250
which as it turns out is quite literally 1 in 1.5 million for this exact hand to be dealt. Notice the odds of AK vs KK and a AKx flop are the exact same.

This is not quite the full story though. There are many variations of the same hand where you can flop top 2 pair vs top set e.g. AQ vs AA, same odds, KQ vs KK etc etc by my count there are 156 combinations of top 2 pair flop vs top set and 156 top 2 pair flop vs second best set. The bottom line is that each of these has a 1531250/156 chance which is 1/9815 chance. So mathematically you will flop a hand like the hands below
your AK vs AA, flop AKx
your AQ vs QQ, flop AQx
your 78 vs 77, flop 78x
your 23 vs 22, flop 23x
etc etc
about 1 in every 9815/2 or 1/4400 hands. Notice the latter 2 combos are less likely as hands like 23 and 33 are more likely to be folded preflop. The main point is that these type of cooler hands are pretty rare and so when you run into 4 or 5 or more that go against you in a short span your results will be greatly "stressed" as will you. There are many other cooler type hands one can think of, and the math will typically be similar.

you flop a nut straight vs a flopped a flush
you flop a set vs a bigger set
you flop a flush vs a bigger flush
you flop 2 pair vs a set
or my personal favorite from a couple months ago
i flopped QQQ vs a guy that flopped 999, we were both 2 stacks deep at 100nl, he spikes the 1 outer 9 on the turn
most people will never play enough hands in their life for this specific situation to even out in the long run.

When you add up the all the different cooler variations and the tiny chances of them happening it turns out to be not that uncommon to be dealt a cooler from time to time, but you are just as likely to be on the good side as the bad side so in the long run they do even out. However, it can really test your mental toughness and discipline during bad patches. I find it helpful to understand the math to keep my attitude from going Tilty, and when that doesnt work, i just take a break until i think i can play again w/o letting additional bad beats/coolers affect my attitude. Sadly a break doesnt guarantee your luck will improve, it simply lets you regain your mental balance.

Apparently it has been longer than i realized since i have had a tough run and my mental toughness was not as strong as i thought it was. Net result is the break was probaly the best thing i could do at this time. As it turns out I havent gone more than 1 day without playing in the last couple years. I plan on a couple more days to regroup and recharge and then fancy another go at building the bankroll uo to $500 and hit the 50nl part of the challenge.

Again the point of this is more to point out what Atta has said about the long run being around 50,000+ hands and how he has had cold runs and hot runs that last that long where his results varied greatly due to the variation in cards and how your opponents play. In the long run each of the specific unusual situation will not neccesisarily even out, but all the different unusual situations that happen for or against you have a chance to even out overall. I was trying to use a few examples of unusual coolers that show it will take a lot of hands for the odds to regress to the mean per my previous nerdy post and your short term results can be greatly effected by unusual situations in the short run.

Howdy Again Everyone
I seem to have typed over the update that contained 3 horrible sessions in a row that took me from around $440 down to about $340, after some rakeback and another 10 payment from sign up bonus i started at 354 today. A basic summary of the 3 sessions was stacking of 2 or 3 or 4 times to start each session and battling back to about a stack or stack and a half loss, net result was a set back toward goal of 500 to start 50nl play and my mental health, hence the break. I did watch the latest Atta22 video the other day and saw him take a couple beats which strangely got me motivated to get back with the program.

Started $354.29, got 10 bonus since i took a break
386 hands
+$25.44
WR= 26 bb/100 hands

Ended at $379.77

Nothing too interesting, although i finished 1 stack ahead, my session EV was -$15, my AQs sucked out on KK on river, so maybe my luck is changing, although once again my aq flopped 2 pr vs AA to start the session in my ongoing effort to always stack off early and dig a hole to start.

Howdy Again Everyone

Its good to get playing again, however i am going on vacation on tuesday for 2 weeks at my kids baseball tourney in San Diego and then, you guessed it, DISNEYLAND, so i will be gone for 2 weeks. It is unclear how much i can play during this time, so i will just see what happens. On to todays results.

results for sunday 7/25

Nothing too interesting or eventful in the morning, The evening was a bit frustrating, i flopped a straight 3 times, 2 no action and 1 split w razer who had same hand, i also flopped trip 3’s w/ A3 after i razed and got 3 callers, sadly no action. I also flopped 3 sets, 1 got no action, 2 got 1 call on flop and then nothing. It was nice to finally flop a few hands as i have been running very dry, but getting virtually no action is also frustrating. I guess it beats being coolered all the time though.

I just cant catch a break, flopped 1 more straight and got no action on a QT8 flop, no sets for me, but i did run into 2 though. I had AA 4 times and got no action, QQ twice won a small pot and no action. And the last hand i played was KK vs QQ for stacks preflop, all was well until the river Q. I then had to quit due to aggravation. My 3 bet was 12% as i decided to amp up the aggression and i got several good hands to 3 bet, the plan is only as good as the cards dealt and it just aint working right now. I looked back at my stats over the last 1200 hands i haven’t made a single flush out of 65 flops i took w/ 2 sOOted cards and have only managed to flop 3 sets out of 45 flops i took w/ a pocket pair. You throw in no action on most big pairs or several flopped straights ( i have completed no other straights post flop) and losing when i get action is truly testing my sanity. The results thus far are sad, but i guess i should be happy that i am still ahead given the way i am running.

No HH due to aggravation

After i won a decent pot to begin the session and get up about ½ of a stack, then the variation gods begin to toy w/ me. I don’t think any of the hands, except the last AK hand, have much learning value other bad things can happen again and again and again even when you get it in w/ the best.
