After yesterday’s exercise in aggravation, i took another shot this morning. Amazingly i was able to post a small win. Here are a few hh that demonstrate valuable concepts. I don’t think i will show any more bad beats as it is tiresome and not particularly helpful. They are going to happen, i just hope they ease up a bit.

Play big draw aggressively

I continue to wonder who i pissed off as i my results for this session were well below my EV due to KK losing to AT after we got it in preflop. Overall my results are $90+ below the calculated EV for the 9000 or so hands at 25nl. I don’t believe i have played especially well the last 5000 or so hands and will try to improve the things i can control while I look forward to a less unfortunate stretch, but i will just try to keep making good decisions until the probability gods restore some justice

8/11 results
wednesday - lets try it again
Started $305.81 +$0 rakeback=+$305.81

Alrighty then, i have been stalled in the challenge w/ some family issues and hopefully i can now get back to playing and get this thing going in right direction

81 hands
$32.34
WR= 158 bb/100 hands
3 tables mostly
Ended at $339.82
About 1/2 hrs

Alrighty then after seemingly endless sessions where i couldn’t make a hand, i finally flopped some hands a set of qqq 888 444, also my kk hit a river k to suckout on a slowplaying set of TTT, and my 55 hit a turn 5 to beat a sloplaying AK top pair top kicker on flop. I was able to get the money in on all of the hands except the KKK’s, unfortunately only 2 of the hands had opponents w/ a decent stack and I also stacked off early w/ TT vs a passive player w/ QQ on a 8 hi flop. At any rate it was nice to hit a few hands and get ahead. I then did something i rarely do and called it quits, but the tables were a bit taggy and i thought a winning session would help my mental attitude which has pretty sketchy recently. It is hard to play your best poker when you mind is not clearly focused and looking back to some recent issues over the last several weeks i don’t think it is a total coincidence that my results have sucked as i have been dealing w/ some other issues. So hopefully my result will reflect my improved state of mind moving forward.

There were no particularly interesting hands to discuss this brief session although i reckon it does show that a short hot streak can get things moving in the right direction after a long dry run.

** Dealing Turn ** [ 3h ]
hockeyguy321 checks
MizukiNana bets [$4.40 USD]
hockeyguy321 calls [$4.40 USD] a pretty close decision here, but i picked up a gut draw for 3 more outs, so 13 outs to nut hand, maybe 3 more Aces. I am only getting about 1.25/1 to call but he has a stack 4x bet left in his stack, the pot is getting big enough that he will have a hard time folding if i hit, my 13 outs make me about ¼ to improve, i need to get about another $9 into pot if i hit to cover the gap between my pot odds and the odds of me improving to have a + EV for the hand- you might want to try to work through the math to make sure you can do this as it is a common situation on drawing hands

If i just had some non nut flush draw w/ no over card and no gut draw here i would have folded to the large turn bet as my odds would have been worse and i could have been drawing to non best flush and/or have a very transparent hand if i hit the flush that might not have gotten paid off. The point being bet size matters as it controls the pot odds you give you opponent to chase and vice versa. This is why you want ¾+ pot Cbet vs stations when you have a made hand and similar on the turn bet, stations don’t calculate odds so you want to charge em the most you can on their missed draws to cover the losses when they hit their draws
** Dealing River ** [ 5h ]
hockeyguy321 bets [$11.00 USD] bingo, my dream card to make a totally disguised hand
maybe i should have shoved here for value, but i wanted to get paid and thought he would likely shove over me anyway. I didn’t want to give him a chance to check behind now that i was best, i think my bet size was poor here as few players tend to call a bet 2/3 of stack left, they fold or shove, something to think about for future, i think Atta would have shoved here

** Dealing Flop ** [ 9d, 7s, 9h ]
hockeyguy321 checks no need to scare him out as i have the absolute nuts and his stack is small enough i can get it in even if i miss a street of betting, plus if he has overs this gives him a chance to improve, plus he has been very aggr and will likely bet

it was nice to have a hand hold up again, but the main point is i didn’t look ahead as closely as i should have, for instance if i had pfr on button w/ J9 and he had a stack 6x my raise and he shoves, then i am in a bad spot, so you need to be aware of who you are raising and their range of possible responses and what actions you can or cant take in response to opponents actions

WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF was i thinking
I simply have no explanation for why i called this when we were both 3 stacks deep, this is quite possibly the worst play in my entire poker playing life. I was crushing a bunch of donkeys and there was no need to even bother thinking about calling with the hand i had. I can only assume that aliens took me hostage and distracted me with their probes ( most likely looking for my brain somewhere in my arse since that was where my head was at the time) when this hand took place. Another alternate explanation is that i was Spock from the original Star Trek and i was trying to play poker in the episode when the aliens stole Spock’s brain and i was playing poker before Doctor McCoy had a chance to put Spock’s brain back in his skull. Or maybe i was Doctor McCoy “Dammit Jim, I am a doctor not a poker player” . Whatever the explanation, It is disturbing to know that someone so stupid to make this call has reproduced, I can only hope my kids got my wife’s brain and her looks.

I misplaced my list of interesting hh i wanted to discuss which is unfortunate. However it there weren't anything real exciting, mostly just a bunch of "boring" value poker betting and raising for value. It was a nice change to some of my ongoing battles w/ unfortunate outcomes.
