WHAT AN AMAZING SESSION- AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY

Alrighty, I spoke too soon in previous post. I have never had a session like this before in any game at any level, quite honestly I am a bit numb. I promised in a previous post not to post anymore bad beats, but i must confess I am tempted to break that promise. What i do know is that i dropped over 9 buyins in 1 session. You are probably asking yourself “How could i do that?” Well, it kind of went like this. I was at 3 very good tables in very good seats w/ 2 or 3 loose fish to my right and 1 or 2 taggy/nitty players to my left. Perfect, except for 1 thing. The cards simply didn’t cooperate.

At the start of the session I rarely hit a flop and saw way too many 89Q 2 tone type flops vs 2 or more 50%+ vpip types when i had AK type hand. Also several lags check raised me out of some pots when i Cbet air. I lost coin flip after coin flip to short stacks, I flopped middle set and lost to top set, I had a couple chasers catch their draw. OK fine, I am down a few buyins, these things happen. I am playing fine in great seats vs bad players, no reason to leave 3 juicy tables. I flop another set, only to find opponent flopped higher set. I raise w/ QQ, flop comes 744, we get it in on the flop and lose to KK. I raise w/ TT and get it in on 442 flop and lose to JJ. It must be time for me to flop second best set for 3rd time in 1 session, yup. Ok, now i am down about 6 or 7 buyins and I am starting to question the universe. But i am still in great seats vs bad players so i take a deep breath and regroup and play on just trying to get part of it back. SAdly, It seems like it is time for me to have a top pair and straight draw vs a serial donk shover who pushes it in, I call only to see he has the same hand top pair w/ straight draw and a flush draw that comes on the turn. I follow this up w/ AK top two pair calling a turn stack shove by a JT bottom pair w/ a gut draw, naturally he hit his gutter on the river- Another stack lost. At this point i decide to turn off my blinds, but before I can slink off and slit my wrists I manage to flop top pair again, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, déjà vu all over again, i checkraise flop and get called, the opponent shoves on the turn again, i call and watch him suckout again - Another stack lost. At this point I am completely numb and decide to see where my results are at, i know it aint good, but didn’t really have a clue how bad it had gotten. As it turned out i went from $420+ to about $198. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what it looked like

631 hands
$-232.39, over 9 buyins
WR= -147 bb/100 hands
3 tables mostly
Ended at $198.62
About 4.5 hrs

After a day or so i decided to Look a bit deeper to see WTF happened. Using HM i played 21 hands where i won or lost over 25 big blinds. I lost 15 of the hands and won 6 hands for a net of -$173.50, my expected loss was -$19.82 (which is nothing to be excited about), but i was still getting it in many times when i was ahead, but I was over 6 buyins in the hole on bad luck in the big pots. Obviously there is nothing i can do if i get it in good and the opponents keep sucking out. This type of run typically results in poor results in the bankroll, but unfortunately if i imagine for a moment statistical justice prevailed here. I would still been over 3 buyins in the hole for the session. How did that happen? That would be the 3 times i flopped a set only to wake up and find opponent had a bigger set ( when was the last time you saw a set over set, when was the last time you were in a hand when it as set over set on the flop, but 3 times in same session all on the losing end?). Since we at OP don’t sloplay sets, in went the $$$$$$ when i only had 1 out, there go 3 more stacks when i had about 3% equity, so these hands don’t barely show up in the above mentioned EV results, when i get it in w/ 1 out, i expect to lose. The same thing applies when i got in with the smaller over pairs (which happened 3 times when i had smaller over pair and once when i had the bigger overpair) the smaller overpair is about a 11/1 underdog after the flop. So there went another 5 buyins on coolers (set over set is very rare, and big over pair vs big over pair are pretty rare as well) which should and do even out in the long run, sadly Monday night was not the long run. Sometimes “bad luck” is opponents hitting all their draws, or you never hitting a flop or a draw, sometimes it is being on the wrong end of a cooler or two, but when you add them all in one session it felt like an unscheduled visit to an angry proctologist.

Obviously after a session like this it is hard to make an argument that i played great poker with a straight face, and clarity of thought is also a challenge. So after a couple days to make peace with the events (which is still a bit of a work in progress). I have gone back to look at the session and try to more clearly analyze the carnage.

After reviewing the session on HM there were certainly some hands i would play differently (as there always are) but these were typically small pots w/ 1 or 2 meddium 15 bb type pots. However none of them had much effect on my overall session results. Upon review i have concluded that the combination of being dealt a bunch of coolers where i had virtually no equity, and too many big pots where donkeys sucked out makes it look and feel like i don’t know how to play. However, I think I can make a case i played break even or slightly +EV poker and just got caught in a perfect storm of statistical variation against me. I did see a post this morning from Morten in the variance section on the forum where he took 3 stack size beats in quick succession which made me feel a bit better knowing it doesn’t just happen to me.

Alrighty then, now that i have snivelled and whined lets look at some useful hand histories

A rare but interesting situation, but it shows another way bet size matters

hockeyguy321 bets [$4.28 USD] HORRIBLE BET SIZE HERE, i should either bet enough to put the short stack all in. Putting short guy allin in just straight value move. Or bet just less than ½ the amount the short stack has left. In this hand i felt positive the short stack guy was calling any bet or shoving if i bet less than his stack. The reason less than half his stack is better bet size here is because when he shoves to raise me his raise is more than 2x my bet, so if the guy behind calls it doesn’t close the betting and i can reshove which either forces the button to abandon his money in the pot or call another large bet to chase or with a worse hand or draw when he is large – EV.. In all honesty after this session i just wanted to quit the challenge and go play my regular games and bust out a few sng’s to try to get some decent mojo back. I was already somewhat frustrated w/ my results thus far and this fiasco didn’t help. Upon further reflection the next day i still felt the same way, but now a couple days later i realized this is probably a pretty common thing that happens to players and their bankrolls so i didn’t want to wuss out. So i decided i needed to follow the challenge rules to hopefully show a bad downswing or 2 isn’t the end of the world and doesn’t mean you can’t beat the games. You just need to be honest w/ yourself about whether you were getting it in good and being unlucky rather than getting your money in bad and losing as you should. I believe i have new appreciation (and by that i mean i F***ing hate it) and understanding of variance.

i will take a few days to regroup before i jump back in and also get ready for the start of school

Hi Hockeyguy,

over the last couple of weeks I've been reading your posts about your challenge. I've been grinding at the 50 Dollar tables recently and I took a bit of a downswing. Your struggle gives me confidence that I haven't turned into a bad player at once :). Just wanna say "Hang in there!'

i appreciate the kind words
as i said, the post Morten made of 3 bad hands in a row made me feel better
I have been playing long enough to not sweat a bad beat or two or three,
but holy crap i was passed around like the prison B*****.

But a lot worse things have happened to a lot better people than me,
so chin up and tally ho

Howdy again all

I got in a few more short sessions of 25nl

Overall results
Started at $255.93
625 hands
+$ 17.90 + rakeback $4.18
11bb/100
End $278.15

I got off to a bad start Friday night with a set of 333 to set of 999 and then made second best flush 3 way where all 3 players made a flush on the turn, bad play by me on river and so i was 2 BI’s down right off the starting line, I struggled for a while after that and was down almost 4 BI’s before i caught a few hands and rallied back to less than 2 BI’s down. This is my usual goal if i am having a bad session, i try to get back half so i don’t put too much pressure on myself, if i get back more cool, but i usually feel pretty good if i can get back half. I played another couple short sessions saturday and was able to have a decent result finishing up about 3 BI’s. Yeah i did violate the $250 bankroll Saturday am, but i was sick of 10nl so i took a chance and it worked out

Here are a few hh.

** Dealing Flop ** [ 2h, 5d, Qh ] Bingo, now how to get value here, other limper is 57/32 preflop, flop is pretty dry, i don’t want lag getting free card if he has a draw, if pfr has AK AJ he may check behind as well, if lag has something i can trap him between us since he is clueless and might call with all kinds of crap, A baby, Qx, 2 hearts, middle pairs etc, If i bet and pfr has something my donk bet can put pressure on him to protect his hand by raising if he has something as he doesn’t want the lag lingering either
hockeyguy321 bets [$2.20 USD]- i choose to make a weakish donk looking ½ pot bet, trying to bait lag and give tag a chance to protect his hand

Poecilotheriapoker raises [$10.45 USD]
hockeyguy321 raises [$21.35 USD] I love it when a plan comes together, time to get it in, if i just call it is too close to giving lag odds to chase a flush, it is important to remember what odds you are offering your opponents, you want to offer odds that make it wrong for them to call
the pfr isn’t folding, so i shove

Notice i got a bit of extra value (9BB) from lag by donking and created a situation that almost forced pfr to stack off if he has a hand, if he has weak hand i still have a chance to get value from a caller or two of my donk bet, a check in this situation does none of this. It is important to look at table dynamics as it can create very favorable or unfavorable situations in multiway pots.

Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Postby hockeyguy » Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:12 pm

Howdy again all

I got in another short sessions of 25nl sunday

Started at $278.15 + rakeback $2.80=280.95
166 hands
+$19.44
48 bb/100
End $300.39

I have been making a concerted effort to tighten up a bit in this second visit to the 25nl level. After thinking about my previous play in this challenge and being frustrated by poor results, some bad runs of cards, and pretty sloppy play in too many spots by me. I decided that i was being a bit cocky and far too disrespectful of the opponentswhich led to me putting myself in too many marginal positions. Therefore in order to get back on track i will revert to more strict value guidelines in hand selection as well as paying more attention to position. I believe my desire to complete the challenge as quickly as possible and total disregard for the opponents combined to let my play stray into too many LAGGY type plays which was not the point of the challenge, it was designed to show how simple solid ABC poker is sufficient to beat the microgames and build a bankroll with relatively little trouble. I have also learned i am not good enough to get too laggy in my play which is good to know.

Here are a few hh.

hockeyguy321 checks- here is where having a plan really helps, notice the rock is very aggro on flop, so he will bet anything on this flop if i check, he might fold overs if i Donk
BluffBoyBluff bets [$2.00 USD]- no surprise C bet
hockeyguy321 raises [$5.00 USD] OK, now part 2 of the plan, the guy is a rock so i give him credit for paying some attention to common plays at this level, like a weakish check raise with a draw on a raggy flop, given his aggro flop play i expect him to at least call after a C bet and to reraise with an over pair (which given his preflop tightness is very possible). My bet size is picked to look a bit weak like many check raisers make w/ a draw at these levels, it gives him a chance to call w/ overs (more value than if i make 4x raise and he folds) drawing basically dead, or get frisky w/ a big pair, either way is fine with me. The only hand i am concerned with vs this rock is AhKh or AhQh, both of which he will get it in with and i am big fave to beat anyway, i don’t put 88 77 or other heart draw in his range.

Also notice bet sizing, when i check raise, a 3x reraise by him leaves him little left so it is an easy shove for him, if i donk into him and he makes 4x raise and i shove he still has most of his stack left and might be able to get away from some of his range- just something else to be aware of looking ahead in the hand

BluffBoyBluff raises [$25.59 USD] i hear the fat lady warming up
hockeyguy321 calls [$18.40 USD]
BluffBoyBluff shows [Kd, Ks ]
hockeyguy321 shows [2d, 2s ]
** Dealing Turn ** [ Qc ]
** Dealing River ** [ Jh ]
BluffBoyBluff wins $4.19 USD
hockeyguy321 wins $47.17 USD from main pot- Que the fat lady

notice vs a passive player i probably donk into him and not let the pot go unbet hoping he has enough to at least call with for a street or two, if they have an overpair they will raise the flop or turn anyway, but you cant count on them C betting a miss

bottom line- have a plan, it may be different for different types of opponents, but having a plan increases the chance to get max value, the hand above may well turn out the same no matter what i did, but it is quite tragic to not get the opponent’s entire stack in a situation like this which i have seen many many times in these games due to poor play by the player withe the big hand

Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Postby hockeyguy » Mon Oct 11, 2010 7:56 pm

Howdy again everyone
Sorry for the kind of long post
After a crazy start to the new school year and the end of the high school golf season
I finally have some free time and energy to get back to playing a little poker. I haven’t had time to fit in any long sessions, but i have fit in several shorter sessions typically ranging between 1 and 2 hours over the last week. I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll

10/3
$260.50
$278.07

10/4
$280.19
$285.15

10/8

10/9
$297.60
$307.37

$322.14

10/9
$322.14
$312.61

10/9
$312.61
$320.19

10/10
$325.75 rakeback $5.59
$338.67

10/10
$338.67
$347.16

10/10
$347.16
$357.17

10/10
$357.17
$363.65

The thing that is evident is that i didn’t have any huge winning sessions and i finished 9 out of 10 sessions ahead and it added up to decent results overall.

Since 10/3
I was typically playing 3 tables so i have about 15 hours played over these sessions or about $7/hr winrate

2369 hands
+$99.82 (ev +$97.82) + about $5 in rakeback
16.8 bb/100 hands
Vpip 22.6%
Pfr 15.0%
3 bet % 5.2
Call vs 3 bet 22%
Squeeze 4.4%
Wtsd 24%

Below are the results for last 12,000 hands at 25 nl prior to 10/3
-$155.18 (ev -$46.84) remembering i lost over 9 buyins (over $240 ) in a world class
hideous session In the middle of September during these 12000 hands

-5 bb/100 hands
Vpip 25.7%
Pfr 17.8%
3 bet 6.2%
Call vs 3 bet 38%
Squeeze 4.6%
Wtsd 27%

Comparing results to the stretch of hands i played before 10/3 and struggled to make any progress a couple things are evident besides the difference in results. Firstly I finally managed to muster some discipline and tightened up a bit preflop as i had mentioned in previous posts. While it was only a couple % off vpip and pfr and 1% off 3 bet, those were the weakest hands from my range which i think did help me be in better value position postflop in the most recent 2300 hands. The other things that are different were slightly less wtsd from 27% to 24%, again hopefully reducing river calls with the weaker, or more vulnerable hands, or hands that were clearly beat. Lastly and the biggest change was the large decrease in my call 3 bet% from 38% to 22%. Again eliminating a lot of calls with weak (small/med pairs) or vulnerable hands (AT, KQ,AJ etc) keeping me out of bad spots. I had started to get a bit too laggy and i am just not yet good enough to play that way.

I still believe i had more than my share of bad beats during the previous 12,000 hands, but i also know i was playing poorly. Specifically, I was habitually breaking one of the 3 basic tenets to beating micro/low stakes NL games.

Value Bet made hands
Don’t try to make big bluffs (this different than Cbetting or stealing little pots)
Don’t payoff when lags hit their hands- I WAS KILLING MYSELF HERE

I was paying off way too many hands when i knew i was beat, and not just smallish value bets but also paying off big bets. This was killing my results. I have regained the ability to make a laydown. I can sit here now and think of at least 3 hands that if i had called would have eaten up at least ½ of the winnings over the last 2300 hands. I have still taken a few bad beats, but recently i have eliminated most of the wounds i had gotten into the habit of inflicting on myself.

While 2300 hands is a very small sample, i am confident i have regained my previous form at these levels and will continue to play more disciplined poker rather than “trying to win money”
The first will lead to the second, the other way not so much. I have some more thoughts on my poor play during the 25nl portion of this challenge which i am currently trying to collect into a cogent post.

The point of the hand is not the outcome, but that by looking at your hand, your position, and likely actions of the other players you can create very favourable situations for yourself. A raise in this situation is going to result in a lot of tough situations post flop vs several loose players in position behind you and you miss the flop.

JT IS AN ACTION FLOP GIVEN THE HUGE RANGE OF HANDS IT HITS
ak aq aj kq k9 98 97 78 q9 any 2 diamonds and any hand with a j or T

given the action I expect both player to have hit part of the flop so I want to get more in the pot with top 2 pair, i dont expect a set of 666 given virtually nobody leads a set at this level

** Dealing Turn ** [ Ts ] sweet, both players call and I hit gin w/ a boat
mizpho checks
dedihindi checks
hockeyguy321 bets [$10.00 USD] not surprising both check to raiser
now how much to bet, I have to assume both hit flop pretty solid after they called my solid check raise, virtually every draw is dead to my boat so I don’t want to push them out. Given my raise on flop it is hard to put me on Tx, except maybe JT. I want to get at least 1 caller. Sadly I don’t get any callers. It is hard to figure what they call the check raise with but fold to a smallish bet if they have a draw in a big pot. Most players at this level discount opponents have a boat and they are drawing dead, they will call any draw anyway. If they have a draw I want to charge the something, if they miss they wont call squat on the river. I guess a sloplay might induce a shove if they hit their draw on the river. But It is a case of trying to balance winning small bets or big bets, most draws will miss river 80% or more, so 4 smaller bets typically add up to more than 1 big bet when they hit their draw, and if they call a smaller bet and then hit their draw you get both bets. so i think a bet is always best here

Overall, I think this is a spot where a bit smaller bet 1/3 pot keeps them in thinking I have Jx and the second T scared me and/or gave them better drawing odds. I just don’t like betting less than ½ pot as it looks so fishy. I just think when 2 players call a solid checkraise they have enough to call ½ pot on turn most of the time. Overall very frustrating I didn’t win more after 2 callers on the flop

hockeyguy321 calls [$7.55 USD] yikes, very dry board
in all honesty I wasn’t paying as close of attention as I should have been to opponent style, his call on flop limits his range quite a bit given he is pretty taggy
This is a pretty clear example of a hand where tptk has very little chance to be good
Opponent is not the type to float AK and bluff the turn or represent JT, given opponent style he has JT or better, but I call like a stubborn donkey. I can probably get off just tptk to a river shove, but not when the A hits

This is the kind of hand that makes for good, although painful, learning as it will stick in your head for a very long time, the key is to make sure you analyze situation and opponent to put the full picture together. I should have been out on turn w/ a smallish loss instead on getting stacked off. Notice I can fold turn 4 times before I piss away a full stack. The good thing about small mistakes is that they take awhile to add up against you. If you call just 2 times and stack off it takes a long time to get that back, you fold a lot of marginal hands before it cost you 2 stacks

** Dealing River ** [ Ac ] now I am screwed as I cant get away from top 2 pair given pot odds

i have position
he understands position to some degree looking at his pfr by position
so his range is not 15% pfr which has me in not great shape,
more like 24% which kt ok against especially in position, but a lot of his range
cant play vs a 3 bet oop, he folds ¾ to 3 bet, meaning he hates playing vs 3 bet oop
i don’t really want to play multiway w/ KT off and let a raggy Ace KJ or KQ play along
