Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

Alrighty then, it looks last post i was at $431 bucks on 10/31
I haven’t played too much in last month or so as i have been playing more at bodog 100nl and 200nl after not playing very much at those stakes over the summer and also caught the limit bug again and have been trying to knock the rust of my limit game.

It has been a bit of a goofy month as i have had decent results in the challenge after playing a more disciplined style (until yesterday-oops) and would have made it to the next level had i not dropped 45 bucks or so playing limit which was a bit annoying but it is my own fault. I caught the limit bug again toward the beginning of the month and got off to a red hot start on full tilt and bodog playing some limit, but i ended up sliding to Carbon for more limit action due to the lack of consistent limit action at bodog and since i was kicked of Full Tilt and Pokerstars a couple weeks ago due to a Washington state law that those sites have now chosen to honor after several years of legal wrangling. very annoying

For my simplicity i lumped in the $45 of limit losses into my overall bankroll for accounting simplicity. I think i will cease limit on carbon until i complete the nl challenge to not confuse the results moving forward any further. Anyhow here are results from then to now and a couple HH on what to do and not do in certain situations and opponent types.

11/1
$431
$401.54

11/2
$401.54
$391.80

11/3
$391.80
$397.77

11/5
$397.77
$400.19

11/15
$400.19
$341.56

11/20
$341.56
$376.47

11/21
376.47
408.44

Here is a HH that shows the importance of using previous information and betting patterns to be aggressive. The opponent here had a habit of making Donk tester bets with weak hands and then shutting down on non paint flops. So i chose to raise his bet w/ 2 overs. Had he called i was planning on checking down unless i improved as my AT was ahead of any of his drawing hands

this hand shows that weak draws should be folded if a lot of action breaks out, alot of microplayers chase this type of hand and bleed off chips needlessly. Firstly, the tp is weak, the draw is weak and there is way too large a chance to drawing to half the pot which cuts drawing odds in half, i think a call on the min bet is ok, but then the fold to action is mandatory.

Why the overbet preflop, because guy had been donking around 85/55/45 preflop for about 50 hands and called other big raises w/ 76o 93s etc. AKs is only a 3/2 favorite over unpaired cards preflop and after the flop is a huge and transparent favourite or a big underdog if he pairs and i don’t and given his range if i miss i cant be sure he did, so i elect to get it in while i am almost certain to be ahead. That way i get the most money in the pot while i am ahead, more variation results, but much more profitable in the long run. Gotta take the long run view. I would rather be a 3/2 favorite for a bigger amount that a smaller amount

This hand shows the exact mistake i wanted to avoid with the AKs hand above. As it turns out the hands were back to back and i actually pulled my head out of my arse and learned from my own mistake w/ this AQ hand and then played AK correctly vs this yahoo. Also notice if i push 4 bet i almost certainly force out the guy in the middle (a weak tight player)and create more dead money in the pot

So i decide to get ballsy w/ a drawing type hand vs a guy who only bets big hands and is aggressive postflop that will mean my drawing hand will get very few free cards and can only make a weak top pair. Could i have picked a worse situation or played it worse?

On the upside i did pull my head out of lower intestine and play well after this, but aye carumba
What was i thinking? I might have been on winner’s tilt/ego trip from a very good session the night before at 100nl and 200nl. Or just an idiot. Oh well

It is a bit frustrating to have been over $475 3 times now and then reversed direction due to a bad run of cards once and a couple of stretches of bad play when i got impatient and tried to force the action to get to $500 so i could move up stakes. Hopefully i have learned that lesson AGAIN and will focus on solid poker to get this thing going better.

Postby hockeyguy » Mon Nov 29, 2010 9:15 pm

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

A long but interesting session 1145 hands, notice if you dont play too much or only play 1 or 2 tables this could be a week or two of ups and downs, so be patient when things get off to bad card start
Started
$387.45
$409.87

I spent many hours over the past few days rewatching various videos that helped me get regrounded in the style i want to be playing as well as many reminders on some finer points that i think had i let slip my mind in recent sessions. As i have stated and others have echoed there is a ton of good points both big and small in the atta22 videos and it never hurts to revisit them. The session started well as i felt i was playing well making solid bets, good reads, and a couple laydowns when i was sure i was beat ( iwas correct each time) so i was feeling quite good about my play. Then i ran into the evil set machine where i had 4 over pairs run into sets in less than an hour and felt myself getting grumpy as i was now down 3 buyins. Fortunately i quickly had an underpair suck out on kk to river a str8 and AA doubled up to get me back to near level. Of course then i had AA run into another set and j9 trip jjj ran into kj. Although i didn’t stack off w j9 i did lose a bunch of chips to again be down around 3 buyins. Again i was fortunate to flop a set of 888 vs ak to double up which was followed by several other good size pots including 78 that flopped the nuts and got 3 good streets of value from a checker w/ JJ in BB who just called to end. Net result after all the ups and downs was i ended up about a buyin. Most important i felt like i was playing better making better reads and more selective aggression, and avoided several trouble spots with timely laydowns that turned out to be to be correct when the opponents got to showdown.

LETS LOOK AT SOME HH

Lost less than the max i could have

Postby hockeyguy » Sat Dec 04, 2010 11:38 pm

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

11/29
session 670 hands
Started
$409.87
$450.10

Session was slow moving for first 500 hands or so with no hands/no action with missed flops and small pots. Last 150 or so hands got more action although started off w/aq losing to a donk pfr shove w K8o for ½ a stack, but he stirred up some action so it was worth it.

11/30
session 564 hands
Started
$450.10
$473.52

Started out very well when early hand pfr w 33 hit set and doubled up through 9T lag that hit top trips on turn, unfortunately 22 later hit boat on turn aa52 only to uncover a5 bigger boat, oh well still a decent session due to better play and some good value bets w/ medium hands

12/1
473.52
492.63

Nothing really very interesting, got a few hands and flops and bet them, no big wins or bad beats

12/2
492.63
508.32 Finally got over the hump to move up to 50nl

88 a kind of tough spot vs aggro donk liljohnflushed
This guy was playing any 2 rags 75/45 preflop and being very aggressive raising/overbetting/pushing in w/ or w/o a hand postflop even though his postflop stats 1.5/1.8/2.2 didn’t look that aggro- observations and notes are important

hockeyguy321 checks i check here to see what he does, i think i am best since he just called flop i don’t think he has a 7x since he didn’t raise like he had been
liljohnflushed raises [$47.81 USD] i don’t really believe him since i invited him to make a play when i checked. I do know i am way ahead or way behind. It was very close, but I decide to fold after i ran down the clock and wait for a spot where i am more sure i am ahead. The guy has been donking all over the place so i am sure i will get another chance especially since he is 2 stacks deep he will likely be around for a while, had he been only 1 stack deep i would been more likely to call since he could get stacked and leave, if i doubled him up he would then again be deep and likely to hang around. Basically folding here is an effort to minimize variation which i am comfortable making sometimes to preserve my attitude. Pokerwise i think a call is more correct since i kind of invited the turn move.
hockeyguy321 folds
liljohnflushed shows [3d, Qd ] yup, not surprised, but this kind of guy doesn’t know to tighten up after a hand like this so i am confident he cant control himself and i will get another chance

Notice if you ever make a big bluff or suckout you should tighten up a bit since people wont believe you and you can get paid off- Atta22 gameflow 101

the above very common scenario w/ the loose donks at these stakes so it doesn’t bother me to make a lay down and wait for a better spot, it usually doent take long vs these yahoos. As it turned out these 2 hands were only about 10 hands apart, obviously it doesn’t always happen this fast or I end up w/ quads, but a better spot will come along

Lessons learned/relearned during the 25nl level

Patience- i was very impatient during most of the play at 25nl, i wanted to win $$$ fast to get to 50nl and i would be lying if i didn’t admit i wanted to have impressive winrate

Distractions- i was not very focused during most of the 25nl and this led to impatience which led to poor play- see article on site ”causes of bad play” for more discussion of this topic.

Cant win em all, don’t try- I got a good reminder in one of Ryan’s videos i watched the other day, many times i wouldn’t let a hand go due to above impatience and a bit of misplaced ego. I can remember thinking “ i am better than you so i will push you of this hand” which of course violates rule 2 of beating micros- don’t try big bluffs
I can also remember making calls trying to catch people bluffing, again thinking i am better than you i shall prove it by calling your bluffing ass down- which of course violates rule 3 for beating micros- don’t pay off the donkeys- paid off way too many times at 25nl

Again the 3 basic rules to beating micros-
tight should be easy- You can start out extra tight (15%vpip) and stay away from hands oop to start and then add hands as you get more comfortable-i tried to force it and play more marginal hands
don’t make big bluffs- pretty easy- impatience and ego caused me problems
don’t pay off donkeys- the trickiest, remember you wont always be right so don’t sweat being wrong, just try to learm from each situation good or bad- impatience and ego caused me problems

The important thing to take away from this is you don’t have to play anywhere perfect poker to beat these games. Even though i think i played poorly and had some very cold streaks during the 25nl level, i was still able to grow my bankroll and i know you all can too.

I do expect better results at 50nl as i think i have my head out of my rear and have regained the discipline that has let me beat the micros games. Time will tell

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

12/4
session 156 hands
Started
$508.65
$532.65

Session started out missing a bunch of flops vs lap opponents and i had to give em up when opponents bet. Eventually i hit a set of QQ and got a stack for i ended up positive for the session. It was quite a collection of very loose/passive fish and super nits at my tables which is a great combination since the nits stay out of the way and the LAP don’t put any pressure on you with bets or raises w/o a hand, but i didn’t play very long since i was tired after the usual late night Friday after hockey with w/ the boys a day of football watching. Trying to show better discipline than i did at 25 nl

Here are some interesting HH

QQ vs a tight 3 bet opponent

This guy was a tight 3 bettor -5% 3 bet range is approx. JJ QQ KK AA AK AQ AJ AT
My default play vs tight 3 bettors w probable best hand like TT JJ QQ is to just call. If i 4 bet i will fold most of the hands i beat and if shoves i am typically in deep doo doo vs his 4 bet shove range. So i think a call is best and then evaluate the flop. Plus i had position

hockeyguy321 calls [$4.25 USD]
** Dealing Flop ** [ 8s, Qd, Th ] Bingo
FunnyScreenName bets [$8.50 USD]
hockeyguy321 raises [$20.00 USD] hopefully he has an overpair or AK and can call a reasonable raise, JJ will probably call too and TT would be exciting
FunnyScreenName calls [$11.50 USD]
** Dealing Turn ** [ Kc ]
FunnyScreenName raises [$29.73 USD] i don’t give him credit for AJ to 3 bet oop and call flop raise, if he kas KK god bless him

hockeyguy321 shows [Qc, Qs ]
** Dealing River ** [ Ac ]

i was surprised to see the lower end of his 3 bet range, but i think it demonstrates my preflop premise that he would fold preflop to a 4 bet. If he flops an Ace i can get off cheap, but he will only flop an Ace about 1/6 so he essentially bet my hand for me preflop. Of course it is always nice to flop the nuts, hand would be tougher if it was KTx.

12/6
session 366 hands
Started
$600.75
$612.02

A bit of a rockem sockem session with a lot of big pots going for and against me. These sessions are fun to play and are typically pretty profitable which would have been the case had i not made a move at a poorly chosen time and a pretty bad call on another hand. Sadly i seem to have a knack for picking bad times for this type of move so i don’t do it very often. On the upside i did post a small profit which shows you don’t have to play perfect to beat these games although i should have posted a much bigger profit (wasted 18+24=$42+ on too bad plays)- more to practice, doing the obvious sometimes just doenst happen everytime- gotta love poker

Several interesting spots

AA- sometimes you just gotta let em go

But i think KK call shove anyway, so do i really want to be 3 way? lets look

poker stove says
AA vs 22-kk is 4/1 fave
AA vs 2 pocket pairs 2/1 fave
AA vs pair and sOOted connector 2/1 fave
Equity value calc
Case 1 0.8 * pfr stack (and my match) + dead money 14 from 4 bettor= 0.8*(54+54+14)=97.6
Case 2 0.66* pfr stack + my match + 4 bettor stack= .66* 108+50=104.28
Case 3 same as case2 math
Interestingly, a call to try to get 3 rd player in is more +EV than isolating which surprised me
A good example of why work away from table is helpful, i thought there was enough dead money in pot to make isolation more profitable preflop, lesson learned. Furthermore it looks like 4 bettor has to put at least ½ his stack in pot to have enough dead money in pot to make isolation more +EV, but if he did then he should never fold since his pot odds would be about 5/1 so he should call even if he had KK and you showed him AA before he decided since he is getting 5/1 and is only a 4/1 dog. So bottom line AA allin preflop the more the merrier is better, but higher variance

Postby hockeyguy » Sat Dec 11, 2010 11:30 pm

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

Observations on session dynamics. I find i tend to do way better in session from 60 to 90 minutes rather than longer sessions. I can do 4 or 5 sessions in a day, but breaks seem to help me keep focus when playing. My very good winning sessions usually everything goes per plan my good hands get bet and hold up, no surprise there. Moderate to small winning session i usually take 1 bad beat/cooler but can overcome it to finish ahead. Losing sessions usually come in a couple varieties, 2+ bad beats or coolers, a bad beat or cooler combined w/ ice cold flops missing my hands. Fortunately aggressive play can save enough pots that missed my cards in the long run and by their nature bad beats happen less often than good hands getting bet and paid off so that in the long run I can expect to be profitable no matter how frustrating the short run might be.

A new stat i think i will track
Cost of bad plays by me- not just poor but really obviously bad play

Untight- $5, bad call 3 bet by rock and worse part is opportunity to lose more post flop which i did, i put that $15 in bad bluffys below

Bad Bluffs 24+15+15, wierd/annoying as i don’t do this very often

Bad pay off 18
Obvious read(s) missed
Total=77, yikes

and even worse he priced me in again with his turn bet i could have called again given the bet and stack sizes

Howdy again everyone

I have listed the results by date and start and finish bankroll
Various hh that demo interesting hands or important concepts

A new stat i think i will track
Cost of bad plays by me- not just poor but really obviously bad play

Untight- $5, bad call 3 bet by rock and worse part is opportunity to lose more post flop which i did, i put that $15 in bad bluffys below

Bad Bluffs 24+15+15, wierd/annoying as i don’t do this very often

Bad pay off 18
Obvious read(s) missed
Total=77, yikes

12/12/10
Start
$622.04
$675.05

I don’t think i made any really horrible plays other than the jto hand below
Obviously it worked out poorly. Typically i fold to the 3 bet and i wish i had,
After flop that is was a bit of a cooler. I did stack a guy w/ AA vs his KK so ebb and flow
I guess

Ak 4 bet vs very loose 3 bettor

having thought about it now for an hour or 2, i think i should have tanked and flatted trying to induce another bet on river, the most he can have is 2 outs 88-QQ to make a better boat. I am only likely to get action if my AK is second best on flop. AK has a lot of value preflop to fold hands that have a lot of equity vs AK, like small/medium pairs, obviously i have lost all fold equity and should just fold to the 4 bet unless i was shallow or going to shove so i could see all 5 cards postflop. I switched tables to find better hunting which is something i rarely do, but i had 3 tables and all players were between 14/12 and 22/21 there wasn’t even a “passive” type bad tag like 23/12 you see a lot of and can easily outplay. Do i believe i can beat those tables, yes, but why bother trying to scratch out a tiny winrate when i can switch to find worse players and more/faster/easier winnings.

I found a few tables w/ loose passive players, hit a few hands and got it all back plus a little just like an Atta22 video

i wish i was this spot on every read, but the point is that if we had reversed hands i would have bet the river and more on turn to get more value and he would have been stuck paying off top pair, domination sucks, but triply oop since that last value bet is the biggest so the difference between paying off or saving that last bet is HUGE

i elect to fold sOOted 3 gapper for these reasons,
betting is not closed SunnieBlack12 could do something wierd
i am oop
it is 1.5bb, not 0.5bb, this is the same as dividing your implied odds by 3
J7 is way weaker than JT or J9 with fewer and non nut straight possible
The under card 7 will rarely be top or second pair on the board that might give me good equity
With the best hand on the flop, 9 has a better chance to do
Really strange collection of calling station, tight passive, and loose caller that would be hard to read postflop
I don’t want to squeeze preflop w/ this hand
None of these are deal breakers, but together i think i can find a better place to splash around

I would play a 1 gap sOOted connector 56s+ for 1.5bb, or the J7s for a 0.5bb although it is still VERY MARGINAL. If you are learning to beat these games i think it is best to avoid these types situations. It is a lot easier to lose money than win it in these situations.

Inf/0.5/1.0 post flop a total fit or fold guy, he basically turns his hand face up postflop
He looks aggressive on the flop, but i had seen him check several times on the flop heads up and then fold to a bet

Consequently in theory you can call him in position w/ any 2 cards and see what he does and then you will know what to do after he acts. Of course it is always better to have a hand that can flop well also. J9s is plenty good enough for this since you may be able to steal the pot if he checks w/ J hi and if he bets and you hit the flop you have a good chance to stack him since you know he has a hand

Re: MicroStakes Bankroll Challenge

Postby hockeyguy » Tue Dec 21, 2010 7:34 pm

Howdy again everyone

This is a bit longer p;ost, but i think this has some expecially interesting results on 4 betting and table selection and hh

Bad call preflop 11 (This session)
Bad pay off 18
Obvious read(s) missed
Total=88, yikes

No addition to the idiot play tally, there probably were some candidates that i don’t recall or didn’t make a note to review

12/20/10
Start $664.32
End $622.21

Played a Rockem sockem session w/ a bunch of taggy tables ( i usually look for better tables, but ego and some liquid courage aka Old No. 7 in the square bottle took up the challenge),lots of TAGS tends to lead to more polarized pot size. Big or small pots, loose players tend to blend chips by calling/chasing while tags bet and raise which builds pots or ends the hand

A note on 4 bet pots
I played 6 pots (out of about 450 hands) that were 4 bet preflop and they looked like this

MINE VS THEM
AK vs AK
KK vs AA, river K yeah me
QJs vs KK, a total maniac donk short stacker 44/35/22 preflop, sadly he woke up w a had
K6s vs ??? i folded to same total maniac donk short stacker 44/35/22 preflop, he folded or shoved to a 3 bet. Mostly fold, so smaller 3 bet to give me an escape, he pushed ALL pairs and most Aces so i had good equity and +ev pot odds
AK vs TT same maniac donk short stacker 44/35/22 preflop, i spiked flop K
AK vs JJ, me in sb vs BB, i pfr, he 3 bets (strange stat guy 15/11/12.5 over 300 hands) given his 3 bet stats AND what i had seen him 3 bet previously, i was happy to get it in w/ AK, sadly he flopped a set and i was toast when turn bricked

There was 1 other hand that should have been 4 bet, utg pfr 2 callers i 3 bet squeeze in bb w/ AA. But utg pfr just calls (he should not call and give callers good odds to play as we were all full stacked +, fortunately both callers folded as board ended up with a middle 4 straight that hits a lot of hands to beat 1 pr) i checked 9 hi flop to very aggro flop player, he made 1/6 pot bet, i raised, he pushed and i smiled

The point being most 4 bet pots end up w/ AA KK AK innolved at the 50nl and down, with the donk short stack being the exception, and JJ in blind vs blind is tough to get away from

Here are some other hh of interest
