moving up levels

Postby JohnDoe26 » Mon Sep 27, 2010 12:40 pm

I am looking for a bit of advice more than anything about moving up levels. Whereby i can get a bankroll from the $20 mark to $80 no problem and in about 2 weeks playing the $2 6max sngs, however, once i hit this mark i seem to struggle to make progress i.e. i will get it up to $100 and then go back down to $80 etc and yo yo around this mark.

So has anyone else experienced this and if so, what things did you do to overcome this apart from keep grinding?

Hi John!

I read books, not fast, just abit from time to time, in the book im reading atm I have red like 40% since first of August. Im also looking in PokerTracker (a hand analyser) on my 3 biggest losses from the session and see if I could spare some money on them. I also watch OutstandingPoker trainingvideos, as with the book, I dont watch alot in a row, just one movie and thinking about things in it, put myself deeper into how the videomaker thinks and try to do the same later when I play. If u do this allready. Grind some more :P =D

Best wishes

I don't think there is much else you can do except continue working to improve. Variance will hold you back from time to time. If you are not up for grinding it out just take a break for a while and do other stuff that interests you.

Take time off and watch the vids and read books etc.

i am gussing it is very aggravating to build up br and then see it go back to where you started, this is not helpful to thoughtful poker, it can lead to bad decisions based on bankroll status instead of the poker situation. I have experienced this during the bankroll challenge when i was trying to win faster so i wouldnt embarass myself, i made a lot bad plays "trying to win" instead of trying to play solid ABC poker

whenever i was moving up levels i almost always waited until my bankroll was way bigger than needed so if it went poorly to start i could keep playing w/ no bankroll worries so i was never in a position of playing scared on a short bankroll. based on my recent experience w/ the bankroll challenge i think my plan was wise to not be in a hurry to move up stakes.

i did this at limit, sng's, and no limit. For instance i didnt move from 10nl to 25nl until i had about $1000 in my acct or 40 buyins, i was knew i could beat 25nl games pretty easily before that but i wanted to be able to focus on my playand the opponents not my bankroll. I was playing alot more back then so it didnt really take long to build the extra bankroll. Even if i wanted to play for a living (i dont) the little extra time to get there isnt going to affect me in the long run, if i keep improving i will get where i am going.
