I nearly laid this down...

Postby IAMINARUTT » Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:24 pm

As I have mentioned before, I have huge problems laying down big pairs. I very nearly laid this down on the river. In hindsight I should have laid it down.

I did consider a re-raise after the flop but I thought my Aces were pretty safe. Doh.

Gotta work on those big laydowns!

UTG ($19.75)
Hero (MP) ($20.80)
Button ($10.80)

Preflop: Hero is MP with AImage, AImage
1 fold, Hero bets $0.40, 2 folds, BB calls $0.30

Flop: ($0.85) KImage, 10Image, 6Image (2 players)
BB bets $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

Turn: ($1.65) 9Image (2 players)

i have been fiddle farting around on pokerstars and full tilt working on build my tiny bankrolls on those sites
here is a very similar hand that i did lay down

***** Hand History for Game 20167959393 ***** (Full Tilt)
$25.00 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Sunday, April 18, 11:06:09 ET 2010
Table Script (6 max) (Real Money)
Seat 6 is the button
Seat 1: Gravytrain06 ( $14.25 USD )
Seat 2: Aphal ( $25.00 USD )
Seat 3: HockeyGuy1 ( $23.25 USD )
Seat 4: SunRis3r ( $26.78 USD )
Seat 5: Mr_Cartmanez ( $25.00 USD )
Seat 6: tonybg95 ( $26.20 USD )
Gravytrain06 posts small blind [$0.10 USD].
Aphal posts big blind [$0.25 USD].
** Dealing down cards **
Dealt to HockeyGuy1 [ Ad As ]
HockeyGuy1 raises [$1.00 USD]
SunRis3r folds
Mr_Cartmanez folds
tonybg95 calls [$1.00 USD]
Gravytrain06 folds
Aphal folds
** Dealing Flop ** [ Kh, 5s, Tc ]
HockeyGuy1 bets [$1.75 USD]
tonybg95 calls [$1.75 USD]
** Dealing Turn ** [ 9c ]
HockeyGuy1 bets [$3.75 USD]
tonybg95 raises [$8.75 USD]
HockeyGuy1 calls [$5.00 USD]

i think my call here was an error, he was a 30/10 type player w/ 1.0/1.5/1.0 aggr player over 100 or so hands,
so i had a limited read on him since you need a bigger sample size to get a good read on taggier type players

my thinking was maybe he has qj(a common donk cold call hand) and made his str8 or may be set of TTT, or less likely 555
or had a KQ KJ or maybe KT
or had a pair and a draw or gut shot that picked up a draw or a naked flush draw- this appears to be very common turn semibluff on FT

i think i should have shoved here since i am ahead of the majority of his range, unfortunately i wussed and just called

** Dealing River ** [ 6c ]

HockeyGuy1 checks
tonybg95 bets [$14.70 USD]
i would have called virtually any non club river, but i felt the club completed a large portion of his range in addition to the hands that out flopped me. i didnt feel like the pot odds about 2.5/1 were good enough, probably also an error
HockeyGuy1 folds
tonybg95 wins $14.70 USD

turns out he bluffed me

tonybg95 shows [2s, 2h ]
tonybg95 wins $22.19 USD from main pot

overall i think i played this hand poorly on both the turn-very weak, and river-marginal to weak

i dont know if this makes you feel better, but this hand has been annoying me for a few days so i thought i would post my dirty laundry to make me feel better
maybe it will help others to learn from my mistakes

i dont like the call on the flop, the board is way to draw heavy and KT6 flop has few hands that outflopped you
i would definitely put in a stiff raze about 2.00 or 2.50 raze
assuming he calls that (he wouuld have, qj cold callers dont fold 8 out draws) and leads again i would probably just call down the turn 9
the reason being if he has you beat you control pot size/loss and if he is pushing a draw he bet your hand for you so you gained value
i would call most any reasonable lead bet on river as well almost regardless on the card w/ the following exception
a turn spade to complete flush and a big lead by villian-
the reason being he cant be sure you dont have the draw after you go to call mode-unless i had specific note on bad guy

That is indeed a similar hand! Thanks for sharing your pain. Nice to see that my situation could have been a bluff too.

posting error
so i will try to complete thoughts here

i think both hands should have been played more aggro, you on flop, me on the turn
you would have gotten more $$$ when you were ahead, i would have likely ended and won the hand

fyi- at 10nl i almost never folded AA hu, i usually just tried to get it in post flop at the first chance, so i would have just shoved the flop w/ a K hi draw heavy board, the draws wont fold and neither can most top pairs at this level. You get paid off way more often than find a monster out flopped you(and typically you still have a redraw to beat a set or 2 pair, not great-but a chance) I didnt really consider laying down AA until 25 nl games and that was still pretty rare.

one of the things i noticed as i worked up through the micro games was most players play scary boards in a pretty straightforward manner if they have it and passive if they dont. But they is a certain portion of players that love to try to bluff almost evey scare card, so notes on these type players are very important, this habits typically show up in a strange set of aggr stats on each street for the villian.they also love to show a bluf early like Mr 22 did to me.

Another thing i noticed is the fewer different possible hands that out flopped you the more likely that is the hand they have so i would try no to grow the pot in these situations. The reason being if they dont have the goods (qj like in your HH), then they cant call a big raise, but will call if they have you beat. It is kind of a variation on the river bet that can only get called by a better hand while all worse hands will fold, only it is a raise they cant call, but they will keep betting a mediocre hand if you play a little less aggr for a street before you raise. Again this play is an exception to the abc aggression generally used in the micros and is aimed at a specific type of villian.
