New challenge... Ideas wanted!

Postby Mattutaylor » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:50 am

Ok so you may remember a couple months ago I did a heads up sit n go bankroll challenge, where I turned a standard $100 deposit into over 2k pretty easily.
Off site, I actually had a challenge in the month of july to make $10k from $55 hu sngs along with the 280fpp satellites to the sunday 1/4 mill on stars which reward $11 a time.
It got to the 10th of the month and I was up over $4,500 and looked like I was going to acheive my goal easily.

Then me and my girlfriend took the decision to get our own place and moved in 5 days later. It was a further 5 days before I began playing again and given that I had missed so much of the month I decided it wasn't worth continuing.

But now I feel the need for another challenge. Probably another bankroll one.

I've been running through some idea's of what I could do instead of HUSNGS. I've contemplated standard 1 table sngs, multi-table sngs, even cash games but I'm unsure really :S

For starters, you progress through the limits much slower in all of these in comparison to HUsngs, and this could be a problem seeing as I still have to make money to live off for the month which I don't really see possible playing $6 sngs. Even then, a starters bankroll of $50-$100 for 1 table sngs really isnt great.

Im not overly competent with cash games. But even so, I fancy the challenge, but yet again, starting out low at .5/.10 cent is gonna be ridiculous for me. As we've seen with Hockeyguys challenge, its a pretty slow process going through the limits, and even whilst I might play more tables and generally put more volume in, I'm not sure how its gonna figure out.

Multi-table sngs are another option. We've all heard of Boku87 who turned $5 into $100k and $100 into $10k in 2 weeks. The only issue I see with this is that I will have to buy table-ninja but meh... thats a possibility.

I dunno, give me some ideas, maybe I've missed something!

Hi, Matt,
maybe you'll teach us how to play freerolls, where from most of us try to get some money?
You can start building your bankroll from zero and then move to micro sngs.

The problem with that is the same as griding small stakes cash games... I still have to make a living and the time taken to get from freerolls to small stakes sngs would be about 2 weeks i think :/

How about grinding the 180-man SNG's and making videos on them? They'll probably give good coverage of a lot of MTT concepts from early stages to late stages that I'm sure a lot of members will benefit from.

That's if Matt is paying tax in the first place :)

I don't have any ideas about a new challenge, but an article for UK players regarding paying (or not paying) tax, NI contributions would be welcomed.

For example I know that UK players, even professional poker players, don't have to pay tax on their winnings even if it is their sole source of income. However, were that person to become a sponsored pro, or a coach, would they then pay tax on what they make from coaching, appearances etc or would they have to pay tax on all their winnings too?

Hmmmmm... ye I'm thinking along the lines of MTT SNGs too... I mean, I can 12 table without Table Ninja & I have good results in MTT SNGs at all levels... in fact lemme list them, starting with 45 mans

$6 level - 397 $1 $6 20% $517 (games played, profit per game, av buy in, ROI, total profit)

$12 level - 714 $0 $11 3% $238 (this is a bit of an anomoly, I've been running pretty horribly in the $12 45 mans recently whenever I've played them, but I used to have a sharkfin!)

$27 level - 220 $7 $25 26% $1,519 (decent results over small sample but I have a sharkfin :) )

$38 level - 19 -$5 $35 -14% -$100 (Obv not played enough to get any kind of reliable info from this)

$60 level - 39 $5 $55 8% $197 (again small sample but not too bad, fields in these are usually solid)

and then on to the $180s

$4.40 - 68 $2 $4 56% $167 (solid, small sample but solid)

$12 - 539 $6 $11 54% $3,493 (This is what i'm most impressed with. Again another sharkfin)

So, MTT SNGs certainly look a viable option. I might start at the $3 45 mans with like a $100 bankroll again and move up to the $6s at $180 playing 30 buy in rule which is quite risky but certainly do-able.

At $400 I'll start playing the $12 45 mans but I'm not gonna add the $12 180 mans until I hit $750 as the variance and swings in these is pretty huge. I'll probably end up purchasing table ninja when I reach this point though as 20+ tabling is pretty essential for rakeback + bonuses.

I'll definitely start to make video's regarding these aswell. These tournaments tend to follow pretty much the same format as the $215 turbo MTT that I put out recently, but obviously over time I'll go into more detail about them.

With regard to UK Tax widge, you might find this helpful :)

No tax at all :)

What are the benefits of Ninja ?

Also once you have done this Challenge, maybe the next one will be with another one of the other teachers. See which one of you hit the Goal First.

Maybe have members vote - The Game and Goal (of course from a multi of your guys chooses)
