Next Video series - Preface & Diary

Postby Mattutaylor » Wed Mar 24, 2010 12:26 pm

Ok guys, so with the 4th and final part of my first video series due to go up at any time, I thought I would give you a quick kind of preface to my next video series and how we are going to go about it.

Firsts first... its going to be a heads up sng video.

Heads up is definitely my strongest point and I feel that there are going to be a lot of new things you guys will learn that will really help you become consistent winners in these games.

Now, this is not going to be an ordinary series for a few reasons.

Firstly, its going to be more a classroom based series rather than analysing past hand histories. Mainly using powerpoint i'm going to take you right through from the fundamentals of heads up sit n go's to some quite advanced stuff.

But hell why stop here>??????????????????

Just to go that one step further, I am going to prove to you just how easy it is to build a bankroll from these games. I have withdrawn all but $100 from my pokerstars account, (I chose this figure seeing as it seems like a general sized deposit for a new or in-experienced player).

Beginning tomorrow, I am going to start at the $6 level and move up (and maybe down but i hope not) following certain bankroll guidelines that I set out in the series, eventually playing the $200+ games.

Everyday that I play, I will post at least once in this thread to show my progress, and I would really enjoy it if some of you could do the same too!

There may be points where I have to play a different game or deposit more (so I can live!!) but we will still be able to use sharkscope to track our progress.

This series is gonna go on for quite a while as I'm going to do 2 or 3 episodes to get us in to the swing of things and then 1 here or there between other series' as a general buffer on what is happening and how we can go on to better our games.

Anyway! I'm gonna have a word with Atta and see if he can make this thread a sticky and we'll go from there!

Gl to me! and I hope you all enjoy the forthcoming series.

Day 1

Ok!! So here we go.

Not put in that much volume today, played for about 3 and a half hours grinding the $6 level. I genuinelly forgot how easy it is to make money at the low levels, i mean literally only 1 in 5 games or so will you find someone who actually has half a clue as to a general strategy for heads up.
You see absolutely all sorts, from people raising preflop to 8 or 9 times the big blind to absolutely ridiculous bluffs. The biggest mistake you will find at this level is people playing way too loose out of position. Obviously I'm going to be discussing things like what hands we can defend our big blinds with in the video series, however suffice to say that seeing people defend with any 2 suited cards is pretty common. Sometimes you actually have to wonder what these guys are folding!

Anyway, it went ok. Im about 6 buy ins up which is about reasonable for a typical day playing heads up, however I think when playing the $6-$22 level, 10 buy ins is pretty easily acheivable and occasionally you will get bigger.
Also plus the fact I have only been two tabling today as i'm on the laptop so I'm quite happy. I find its quite nice to drop from my usual 4 tables to 2 tables here and there just so I can concentrate more on getting reads etc.

So from the starting balance of $100 I finish my stars session today on $136.96. A total profit of $36.96

I'm going to be moving up to the $11 level at about $200 which I hope to acheive by the end of the weekend.

Not sure if I will be playing tomorrow, maybe I will put in a few hours but I have quite a busy weekend ahead, so dont be surprised if there is nothing to report until sunday.

Peace out to you all.

Day 2

Ok, so I managed to find a bit of time to play today. I got about 2 hours in which isn't too bad and results were ok too. Before yesterday it had been quite a while since I'd played any HU sngs seeing as I had been concentrating on improving my HU cash. Now I can actually see myself getting into the swing of things though.

Its actually quite funny at low limits on stars... I'm a supernova in the VIP Programme, have been for about 2 years now... but its just funny to see some of the stuff opponents say.
Today I got a "WTF, supernova and 30k profit playing $6 heads up?". Before its been quotes like "broke?" etc etc. (seeing as stars let you set it so you can display your VIP status).

Anyways, on to todays results. Like I said, I did pretty well and think that I will definitely hit my $200 goal to move up tomorrow.

Starting Balance - $136.96 and closing today on $163.71 for todays profit of $26.75

I'd love to say I'm looking forward to moving up, however, for some un-beknown reason, I tend to struggle at the $11 level and then go on to crush $22 upwards, so who knows what will happen.

I'll also be producing the first part in the video series tomorrow and that should be up in the next couple weeks!!!

gl and peace out

Day 3

Ok, so I didnt actually get to play over the weekend for one reason and another, so today has been my day 3 and its not gone too bad at all really. I mean, it started rough, dropping 5 buy ins or so at the $6s (jesus for my first hour or so of playing I wished I hadnt got out of bed) , but then I managed to go on a decent run winning 7 in a row or something like that, subsequently getting back to todays starting level and more.

The good run at the $6s went on and I hit the $200 mark to be able to move up the $11.50s, which were pretty much break even for my first 15 games.

There are definitely more solid players at this level and I dont see much of a gap really between these and the $22s but with the standard of heads up play going up, thats only to be expected.

So it's taken me 3 days to get up to the next level, and I wouldn't really look at it as days. I would prefer to look at it in terms of hours or even games. I mean, I've played for about 6 hours today taking an hour break at one point and also regular drink/ clear my mind breaks, (something I will talk about in a video soon). So in total I've played about 10 hours or 84 games before being able to move up a level.

Having broke even over my first 15 games in the $11s, and needing to make closer to 20 buy ins before moving up to $22s (at $400), I expect this to take slightly longer. However if I go on a good streak of 7 or 8, which is quite acheivable, this could be done relatively quickly. Especially now that I'm back at home able to play on a computer instead, thus being able to put in more volume.

So in summary I've managed to move up to the $11s and will be moving up to the $22s at $400.

Todays starting balance was $163.71 and closing today on $202.21 for a profit of $38.50

I managed to do my first heads up video aswell which is just a basic prima mainly concentrating on a general strategy and slightly more in depth stuff on early game play and 2 games played live. Like I say, its just a general prima and the follow up video's will go into more detail on more technical stuff. This was just to give you a helping hand on your way to the advanced stuff.
Look forward to that going up sometime soon!

Gl to you all and peace out

Day 4

Jesus... todays been a grind. Played for about 5 hours, 73 games. But god do I hate this level. I think I would rather just keep at the $6s!!!! Like I said, I dont know why, but the $11.50s just seem to hate me.

Im sure you guys are gonna have a WTF moment when u see how I ended up today etc, but I broke even for my first 50 games!! It was absolutely terrible. But like with all forms of poker, its about volume. If you put in the volume, you're eventually gonna get the better of it if you are a decent player and that is how you make your money. You just gotta keep pluggin away and pluggin away until things start goin right. And for me that was about 3 and a half hours in to the 5 hour session.

I did try to upload my graph from sharkscope for today but I failed... if anyone has any idea how to do it plz plz plz let me know as it will come in handy in the future.

I'm pretty sure had I have ran anywhere near EV in the first 50 games I would probably be close to the point of moving up by now. Obv that didn't happen though lol, however I made a reasonable profit of around 7 buy ins. I just cant help but feel it should've been more today. Variance for you though...

Nevermind. Here is how day 4 ended up.

Starting balance - $202.71 and closing today on $275.21 for a profit of $72.50.

Pretty good really I suppose!

Aiming to get to $400 tomorrow and be able to move up to the $22s on thursday. Pretty impressed with how its going so far though, I mean, If i can average 2 or 3 days at a level I'm gonna be happy.

Time for me to get get drunk!

Gl and peace out

Day 5

Well, well, well. Been a weird one today, definitely one of those typical days in the life of a HU sng grinder. I've played for about 6 hours, again with breaks where I'll do things like eat, play on Xbox etc... generally anything not poker related.
I was about 5 buy ins up within the first hour and half which left me in really good stead for the rest of the day. And then the break even spell came that just seemed to last forever. Back and forth back and forth never quite getting above the 5 buy ins that I had earnt in the first couple hours play.

As per usual though, towards the end of my session I relaxed and things just fell into place. I can say that (THANK GOD!) I am up to the point where I can move to the $22 games. Woooooooooooo... I fkin hate the $11 level, honestly I really do. Hopefully I wont have to move back down, but we all know what pokers like...

So the $22 level is where I start to feel more at home like I've explained before. With any luck this is where things should start getting really interesting!

Todays starting balance - $275.21 and closing today on $406.71 for a total profit of $131.50.

Almost a 13 buy in day which I'm very happy with.

Tomorrow I'll be starting on the $22s Aiming to move up to the $33s at $800. Another 2 days worth of play?? Who knows....

Gl and peace out and really glad you guys are enjoying this.
