AK played too passively

Postby JimmyChances » Fri May 06, 2011 10:59 am

When I played this hand I didnt have as many hands on him. Now I have more hands on him its obvious i played this bad.
No. Of Hands 168 vpip20 pfr16
call open raise from button 15% 3bet 2.5%
AF 12/1.5/1 Raise Cbt 40%

seat 1: x_PepeSmith(BTN):$9.30
seat 3: rikdojo(SB):$5.10
seat 4: moki222(BB):$10
seat 5: JohnnyChance(UTG) is Hero:$24.11
seat 6: fenris1966(UTG+1):$11.78
seat 7: _taake_(MP+1):$9.60
seat 8: pargir2007(MP):$12.08
seat 9: squawk_you(HJ):$9.79
seat 10: Tanuyak17(CO):$10.07

HOLE CARDS: ($0.15) Hero is UTG with Ks As
JohnnyChance(Hero) raises to $0.40, 5 folds, x_PepeSmith calls $0.40, 2 folds

FLOP: ($0.95) Qh Kd Tc
JohnnyChance(Hero) bets $0.70, x_PepeSmith raises to $2.25, JohnnyChance(Hero) calls $1.55

His flop AF wasnt quite so high at the time but it still was high. I think i should have 3bet him here. or called and bet out the turn. If he reraises I'm probably in bad shape.
TURN: ($5.45)5c
JohnnyChance(Hero) checks, x_PepeSmith checks

RIVER: ($5.45)Ac
JohnnyChance(Hero) checks, x_PepeSmith bets $6.65, 1 folds

The river card was horrible for me as he has a ton of jacks in his range but as played maybe i should have put out a small bet and folded to raise?
running this through poker stove my equity was good til the river vs his range.
FINAL POT: ($12.10)
x_PepeSmith wins $6.65
(Rake $0.36)
I had a pretty horrible feeling I was crushed throughout this hand and it made me play it a little more passively than normal. After seeing how the villain played future hands i think my gut was wrong.

Hi JC

the thing i have experienced w/ this type of hand and flop is that i dont want to play a big pot w/ just tptk. The flop hits so much of a calling range w/ sets, 2 pairs, pair+draw, draws, and draws that split it is hard to know where you are at. Any time opponent gets aggro in this type of hand makes for a very tough decision. Any hand you have crushed like 88 etc are not puttting more money in the pot. The only time i am happy to play a big pot is if i have tptk w/ a gutshot AND THE NUT FLUSH DRAW. Then i have so many outs/equity + possible best hand that i will get it in.

i have been noticing/embracing recently the idea on the flop of "is this a hand i can get 1 street, 2 streets, 3 streets on value, or am i willing to get to the felt if the chance arises?" The interesting thing is the anticipated 2 streets of value give you the most options after a flop cbet to to take various lines depending on your position and opponent style

c bet turn and check river
check call if opponent bets
check behind turn and call a river bet/bluff by opponent

when i have the situation you had in the HH, i am not wanting to felt it or think i can get 3 streets of value and be ahead, but i think if i am ahead i can get 2 streets of value or settle for 1 street of value if i have position issues or reason to believe the opponent can make a play that puts me in a bad spot. If i get too much action i can fold pretty safely knowing i am a coin flip or big dog which over the long run is a bad spot to be in.

thanks for another great reply. I'm working on my thought processes and one thing I'm trying to do is ask myself If I'm committed to the hand after a continuation bet. I like the line of thinking too where i should be asking about how many streets of value i should be looking at. One thing I'm happy about is, I know I used to lose buyins with this type of hand and on these types of flops where as now I'm trying to figure out where and which street and which type of opponent I can even get any value from on this kind of board.
