is it possible making $200/day palying $1BB 6-max

Postby jkl7645 » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:09 am

hi all, i am rather new to cash games. i used to only play tourney. i am just wondering if is it possible making $200/day palying $1BB 6-max on poker star. is it realistic goal?
i just started the atta's video trainings this week and was up 700 the 2 days and lost all 700 back just yesterday. but i was doing the exactly same thing.

so all you cash sharks out there. $200/day for begginner is it realistic goal?

The winning it and losing it back is variance. A big big big part of any kind of poker game you play, be it cash, tournaments or sngs. $200 a day at .50/1 (which is what I think you are referring to) is definitely definitely acheivable, but give it time. If you are a beginner, I would recommend you drop down limits, regardless of how much cash you have ready to invest in poker, because to be frank, 999/1000 players will lose money for the beginning of their poker career, however when you begin to understand the poker a bit better, you are gonna reap the benefits.

Study, study, study!!!

just a little math to answer he question

assume 50 hands/hr- keep math easy
4 tables gives 200hands/hr- i pick 4 tables since i think it is easy to play your A games on this number of tables

10big blind/100 hand win rate(or 5BB- big bet another common unit of win rate calculation-pretty reeasonable long term winrate

all this leads to $20/hr, so ten hrs per day gives 200/day

can you achieve higher winrate- yep
can you play more tables-yep
can you play more hours- yep, but it can be a grind

so it is possible, depends on your skill and dedication

i agree with matt though, try starting a bit lower until you establish solid winning style of play
i have never had a plus 700 day at 100nl, nor a 700 loss day, although up 400 or 500 hundy on 1 table and down a hundy or two at another tables is common, variance can be a bitch

Thanks for posting this. I think it is a really good question. I had wondered the same thing.

I thought this was an interesting article http://www.badvariance.com/playing-poke ... ssionally/

At the end of the day, if it was easy, wouldn't all the online poker coaches play rather than coach?

Also, I bet it must be a real grind playing 8 hours each day every day.

for me to get to 8-10 hrs/day usually looks like during the summer when school is out
3-4 hours in morning, excercise or honey do list for a couple hours, or to the golf course, then a couple hours at tables, then dinner/family chit chat, then 2-4 hours after kid goes to bed

but even with breaks i can end up not wanting to play the afternoon or after dinner sessions for a few days
or i might be tired and drop down a level or 2 so i dont have to think to much to beat the games, but both cut into daily profit

during school year i might get 1 or 2 hrs before dinner and 2-3 hrs after dinner, same deal if i am tired

running bad for an extended period also can lead to a desire to take a break

winning 200 in a day is not a big deal, doing it several days a week is pretty easy,
doing it EVERYDAY is a challenge to your skill and dedication and mental toughness
notice 5 days plus 200, 1 day minus 75, 1 day minus 150=775/7= 110/day, it might feel like 200/day,
but wont pay the bills at 200/day, not that must be a grind if you need it to pay bills

just a been there /still there kinda fyi

i am fortunate that i play for the challenge and enjoyment, the $$$$$ is a bonus/score keeping thing

Just to add to this that I know someone who recently participated in a prop bet to make 30k in a month at $100nl and he made it to like $28,700. Pretty sick. And thats like $1k a day there or there abouts.

Speaking of prop bets, Boku has turned $5 into $60,000 in 8 months. His target is $100,000 in 12 months. http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/boku87/

However, I still wonder if its possible to make a living playing online. I'd love to hear from people who do and how they got started.

I wrote a blog post a while back about how I got started playing professionally: http://blogs.outstandingpoker.com/tim/2 ... s-learned/

Since I wrote that I've moved up to primarily play $3/6 $5/10 and $10/20nl now, all built from my single $50 deposit back in the day.

Cheers,
