Small Pair out of position against a loose passive player

Postby IAMINARUTT » Wed Mar 24, 2010 2:03 pm

Hands like this typically give me a lot of trouble. Especially against the loose players at this level. I had played 180+ hands with UTG and his vpip was 48. In the past I had seen him show down hands as varied as Ax to 73o. According to Poker Edge he lost $2000 - not bad for 5c/10c.

I leak money playing out of position and I am actively trying to reduce this. Should I have raised more pf? I was pretty sure that he would call a raise.

Was it a mistake re-raising him after the flop?

Should I have just given up after he called my flop bet? As I bet, I thought to myself this is a mistake. If he had bet the turn I was folding.

UTG ($6.75)
MP ($6.50)
Button ($6.45)
SB ($10.65)
Hero (BB) ($6.05)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 7Image, 7Image
UTG calls $0.10, 3 folds, Hero checks

Flop: ($0.25) AImage, AImage, JImage (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $0.20, Hero raises to $0.80, UTG calls $0.60

Turn: ($1.85) 9Image (2 players)
Hero bets $1, UTG calls $1

River: ($3.85) 6Image (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks

Total pot: $3.85 | Rake: $0.15

UTG showed down

That should say "if he had bet the river I was folding."

Thinking more about this, it was impossible for me to put him on a hand range so I probably should have raised the pot pre-flop for value...

2 things

vs lags in micros this is a positive ev situation preflop( you didnt mention if he was aggressive or passive)
any two overs are 1/3 to pair flop so you can get more $ in pot when you expect to be ahead post flop
if he calls w A rag or K rag w/ only 1 over he is 1/6 to out flop you by hitting his over card
even better if he pairs undercard he will typically call down to river- value city for you
and remember dont play a big pot with a mediocre hand, if you get played back at be prepared to fold

i followed a pretty simple plan
1) raise preflop 4x bb, sometimes 5 x bb vs certain known stations
i will frequently win preflop uncontested which is fine
2) i cb any flop, i cant put him on a specific range, but i know his unpaired cards will miss flop 2/3 times
most flops i can represent the best hand, if i get called on flop i will check down unless it is all baby 2 tone flop or 1 over 2 tone or rainbow flop. In these cases i give him credit for chasing w overs or a flush draw which will be the case most times. if a blank falls on turn i make a near pot bet to get max value on draw chase. if a bad cards hits i try to check down and try to get to showndown. i would typically call a small river bet from most players that aren't totally passive, again per my hud stats and/or notes.

the only real exception is if villian is 65% + cb caller per my hud stats, in that case i chk and look to get favorable flop to extract value

question?- why fold to river bet here?, both turn and river were blanks- no reason to belive he has you beat- i would call any reasonble bet here (3/4 of pot or less) again except from ultra passive player that habitually sloplayed big hands. A large % of micro players love to make transparent bluffs in these situations.

in general i like to try to end hand early if i am out of position
