Strategy in 180 man Turbo S&G

Postby olliey2k » Fri Aug 20, 2010 11:25 am

Hi all,

I've been working on my 6max and 9man turbo S & G strategy over the past few weeks and have been making around 30% ROI on single table S & G's and i'm almost ready to start 10-tabling 6$ games, but to try and change things up a bit i have been playing the 4$ turbo 180 man games on Stars.

So far, i've found them to be the most frustrating games i've played in since playing .5 / .10 cash! It's so difficult to play any type of position as you are pretty much guarenteed 4-6 limpers every pot that will call any type of positional raise. What normally ends up happening to me is instead of trying to play any type of position i find myself thinking that best strategy is to wait it out until 10x the BB then push every +EV situation, which never seem to come around because you still have 4-5 limpers every pot.

I'd be interested to know what the best early game strategy is for these types of tournaments (not just the 180man s&g but also regular Turbo tournaments. Maybe it's just me and i've conditioned myself to folding QJ in mid position or not 3 betting the button against 4 limpers with A-Jos.

Anyway, any advice would be good.

Also - would just like to mention - Matt, it's good to hear a fellow British voice on the videos, very clear and consice strategy discriptions on everything you're doing :)

Thanks alot.

Hey olly...

firstly thankyou for the compliments :)

Ok, so ya I'm a mixed specialist between heads up sngs, MTTs and multi table sngs. I've been wanting to do a video on MTT sngs for a while now but haven't managed to get around to it.

Firstly, can I just point out that the $4 180 mans you refer to aren't turbo's. The turbo 180 mans they offer on stars are the $3 rebuys, $7, $12 and $36.

By far the most popular of these are the $12 180 mans of which I have played over 500 games with $3,716 profit and a big ROI, even though it is too small of a sample to distinguish what my actual ROI would be. But I do tend to vary between playing MTT sngs and HU sngs as my main source of income these days.

I've been getting inundated with requests for video's of these MTT SNGs, so I suppose it's about time I pulled my finger out and did one.

The problem for you is that it seems you're under-rolled for the popular $12 180s. So... over the next couple weeks, I'll play a whole mixture of 45 man & 180 man sngs, both the $12 turbo's and the $4 standard speed, hopefully winning one of each to make a video on.

The other option available is that I record a live session, something i've been planning for around WCOOP for MTT's...

I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the quick reply :D

Yeah, sorry, i tend to play a mixtures of 180 mtt's and got them mixed up. The turbo 180mans i tend to stick with for the time being are the lower stake 2.20$ games. I'm normally ok with non-turbo 180 man's because there isn't such urgency to get your chips in as often as possible, making positional play more important.

I'm quite happy to play between 6 and 12$ single table 6-max, but, at the moment, i can't justify alloting 2-3% of my bankroll on a $12 180man turbo when i'm struggling with the 2$ ones!

The games i was reffering to in the first post were the turbo based tournaments.

If i can get a stack and get deeper into the tournaments i find my shove / fold play pretty strong as i have a decent understanding on the +ev situations and positional advantage, it's just getting the stack in the first place that i find to be the issue!!

Looking forward to seeing a new video!

Cheers.
