unlucky or better players

Postby hockeyguy » Mon Aug 03, 2009 12:44 pm

i am looking for some feedback on a particular type of flop that has aggravated me in the last few days

specifically 5 times in last 2 days i have flopped top 2 pairs and been stacked by a made straight

the 5 hands i had were and all were razed or 3 bet preflop by me
ak
kq
aj
aq
kj

in each case i ran into a made broadway, obviously that is a bit of bad luck,
i guess to put a finer point on my question is this
i have been working my way up from 0.05/0.10, thru to currently 0.5/1.00 and 1/2 NL games wher these 5 hands occurred

in the lower games i could expect a wide range of hands to give action on flop that would give the above list of hands 2 pair on the flop- ranging from gut draws, open end draws, flush draws, pr with some kind of draw all of which i am willing to get all in against as
well as an occaisional made straight or a set which i am in bad shape against

is there any reason to believe the change in stakes has caused a change in the range of hands i expect to get action from?
obviously i dont fault the villians to give action with the flopped nuts, but i have been forcing the issue 3 or 4 betting to get all in on the flop only to shout NOT AGAIN YOU FILTHY WHORE in the privacy of my family room

in all cases i saw that the flop did open the possible nut straight, but it is pretty hard to give credit for only that range when u get action

any thoughts would be appreciated

hockeyguy,

It pleases me to see you progressing your game very nicely. Great question above.

The next level in poker is where it really starts to separate the skilled players vs. the nits (ie. people who just capitalize on weak players).

It all comes down to hand ranges. You need to really analyze these hands and put them in pokerstove to determine what type of hands your opponents may be raising you with on these wet flops. You also really need to know your opponents in order to come up with an accurate hand range. Each opponent will vary widely. Think about all the possible drawing hands, as well as made hands that you beat with your top two. For example, on a flop of T98, where I flop top-two, I'm not totally excited to get all-in. I might call a flop-check-raise and then fold to further aggression.

My feeling is that you're just getting coolered with top two (ie. you were correct to get all-in as you were ahead of your opponent's range), but in any event you should still evaluate these hands in pokerstove to see how top-two fares against your opponent's likely range.

And yes, it will likely feel like you're getting coolered more often, but since opponents at higher stakes aren't getting it in as lightly, you will just perceive to be coolered more often.
